Rickie Fowler is favored to win the FedEx St. Jude Classic, which begins on Thursday in Memphis, Tennessee. It is the last PGA Tour event before next week’s U.S. Open and most of the world’s top players are bypassing this tournament. Fowler is the only player listed at single-digit odds, as he is listed at 8-1. Brooks Koepka is the second choice in the betting at odds of 12-1, while Adam Scott is listed at 14-1. We went 2-3 last week in our matchup picks, as Dustin Johnson had a rare bad week and let us down. We’ll look to get back on track this week with four plays, including one involving Fowler.

FedEx St. Jude Classic Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. TPC Southwind is a par 70 that measures 7,244 yards. It is a course that rewards accuracy, especially on approach. Sometimes we get caught up too much in looking at a number of stats, so this week we are going to focus on just one, Shots Gained: Approach the Green. The top player in the field this week in that category is Francesco Molinari, who ranks 2nd on the PGA Tour. Rickie Fowler ranks 5th, while Kyle Stanley Ranks 7th. We’ll look to focus on that particular statistic in the matchups for this week.

Rickie Fowler -157 vs. Brooks Koepka

Fowler is 5th on the PGA Tour in Approach, while Koepka ranks 117th. Fowler leads the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and he is second in adjusted scoring. This should be a matchup that we definitely win but the one note of caution is that Koepka has been an impossible player for us to figure out this season, as he disappoints when we pick him but plays well when we don’t. He also has finished tied for 19th, tied for 3rd and tied for 2nd in the last three years of this event. I am still laying the price and taking Fowler in this matchup.

Francesco Molinari -180 vs. Daniel Berger

I like Molinari as one of my top picks to win this tournament and he is up against the defending champion in Berger. Molinari ranks 2nd in Approach, while Berger ranks 43rd. I will lay the price and take Molinari.

Kyle Stanley -150 vs. Billy Horschel

This should be a good week for Stanley who ranks 7th in approach. He goes against Horshel who is just 90th on the PGA Tour in Approach. I will lay the small price and take Stanley in this matchup.

Ian Poulter -102 vs. Graeme McDowell

The most lopsided matchup in terms of where the two players rank on the PGA Tour in Approach is this one, as Poulter is 8th while McDowell is 140th. Poulter also comes in playing well, so I will take Poulter at the small price.
