General Golf DFS Strategy

When you think of fantasy sports, football and baseball likely come to mind first. If not for the last two years, golf would’ve never even crossed your mind. But with daily fantasy being driven down everyone’s throat, fantasy golf has quickly catapulted itself into a viable fantasy entity.

The only way to make money on golf in the past was betting your buddies a couple bucks while playing, or actually betting on the PGA players to win certain tournaments. The prehistoric times for this sport are now over with the advent of daily fantasy golf.

Here’s a couple of pointers if you plan on jumping into the daily fantasy golf waters headfirst in hopes of grabbing yourself some of the major coin being offered up in weekly contests.

Know Players Course History

What’s cool about this new form of fantasy is the way in which you actually go about putting together a roster. Most everyone that follows golf already knows the players by name, but do you think they know how each player’s game actually plays out per course setup?

No? Me neither until I actually started dabbling in daily fantasy golf and found it to be a prerequisite in getting a lineup set. I’d equate it more or less to fantasy baseball batter versus pitcher stats in which you see exactly how players stack up against one another. Only under this scenario, it’s golfer versus course.

Some courses play more to players with excelled long games, while other play better for those that do most of their damage on the greens. It’s of utmost importance to pinpoint which course is going in a particular tournament. From there you’ll be able to identify which players stand out the most, and weed the salary value out from there.

Don’t Just Roster Studs – Seek Out Sleepers

Daily fantasy golf tournaments have started to really pick up some steam. But if you want to be successful playing in them and not just go along for the ride, you must seek out value within your lineup.

Rookie DFS players will always look to roster most of the top dollar players, but don’t be that guy! More times than not, it won’t get you anywhere. In fact, it will often leave you empty handed thinking about what could have been.

Instead, use the advice given up above to seek out lower salaried players whose skills could thrive on the specific golf course in play. Most DFS sites require you to roster six players per lineup. You should aim for at least three studs and three value players. If you were able to roster four value players and two studs, you’d be well ahead of the curve with the majority of the entrants of that contest likely going 3/3 or even 4/2 in favor of the studs.

This frame of mind greatly increases your chances of winning those enormous million dollar GPPs. Going the 3/3 route makes more sense in 50/50s or Head-to-head matchups.

Check Current/Past Performance

While it’s very important to know how particular golfers have performed at certain courses in the past, it’s also very important that each is in a good groove heading into the new week.

Golfers that’ve historically excelled on specific courses will likely enter the tournament loose and confident. To get an idea of how golfers have performed in the past, read as many previews of the event as possible and take a look at previous tournament leaderboards.

Another way to get an idea of how the golfer may or may not fare through the weekend is to look at their odds of winning the tournament. The more chalk you have to lay, the more likely the golfer will advance deep into the tournament.

Combine those aspects of capping potential DFS golf candidates with each player’s recent body of work, and you’re on the right track towards constructing a lineup that could get you in the money. Just like in all sports, success comes with confidence. Seek out lesser known players currently in a groove for your sleeper picks. If their known abilities are in cahoots with how the course plays, you just might have found that golden ticket to advance you into the money rounds.

It’s All About The Cut Baby

I’m saving the most important aspect of daily fantasy golf for last. You must, I repeat, must have a majority of your drafted players make the cut. If most don’t, you will not win any money; it’s that simple.

For example, let’s say you drafted the golfer that ultimately goes on to win the tournament. Great, good for you! But, only one of your other five golfers made the cut. Guess what? You won nothing!

You’re far better off having five of six if not all six of your players advancing past every cut line. Think about it. If your golfer doesn’t qualify, he doesn’t get to play anymore which means he won’t be tallying any more fantasy points the rest of the weekend. When that happens, all you’ll be able to do is watch as every one of your opponent surpasses you in the standings before knocking you out of the money.

The main thing you should be concerned with when constructing your lineup is making the cut, and not winning the whole darn thing.
