Dustin Johnson is favored to win this week’s Genesis Open, which begins on Thursday at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, California. Johnson is not only the No. 1 ranked player in the world, but he is also the defending champion. Johnson is the only player listed at single-digit odds, but it is a strong field for this event, as Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Phil Mickelson are expected to play. We went a nice 4-1 with last week’s matchup picks at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Let’s look at the odds and picks for this week’s Genesis Open.

Genesis Open Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. Riviera is a course where the second shot is the key. The course measures 7,322 yards so long hitters will have an advantage. Johnson is one of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour and hitting short irons into these greens is a huge advantage.
Dustin Johnson -195 vs. Rory McIlroy
I can’t see any reason not to back Johnson in both of his matchups this week, despite the high prices. Johnson is the best player in the world right now and he loves Riviera. He won by five shots here last year and even though he wasn’t great last week at Pebble he still tied for 2nd. Rory tied for 20th last year at Riviera and he didn’t even make the cut last week at Pebble.
Dustin Johnson -195 vs. Jordan Spieth
How can you not like Johnson who has finished fourth or better six times in his last eight trips to Riviera? Spieth said he turned the corner with his putting last week at Pebble, but I didn’t see it. He still has to prove it to me before I back him.
Pat Perez -120 vs. Tiger Woods
I have no idea why Perez is not a -200 favorite or more. What has Tiger done to deserve this type of respect? Perez has been one of the top 50 golfers on the PGA Tour over the last year, he has the edge in driving distance over Tiger and Tiger hasn’t sniffed contention in years.
Tony Finau -130 vs. Xander Schauffele
This one is all about driving distance, as Finau is a big bomber who should do well at Riviera. I like Schauffele, but I am going with the distance edge of Finau in this matchup.
Jason Kokrak -105 vs. Charl Schwartzel
One player that continues to get very little respect in the odds is Kokrak. He came through for us last week in the matchups at Pebble and I think he comes through again against a player in Schwartzel who hasn’t contender in a long time.
Thomas Pieters +100 vs. Daniel Berger
Pieters is another big bomber who likes to play at Riviera. He tied for 2nd last year and was sixth in strokes gained. He is in fine form as he tied for 5th at Abu Dhabi four weeks ago.
