Jason Day says he feels like the man to beat as he looks to dominate the last two weeks of the PGA Tour season and claim the World No.1 ranking and the FedExCup.
Day, a four-time winner this season including his breakout PGA Championship win, says he can now finally walk onto the practice areas at a golf tournament with complete confidence in his abilities after years of self doubt.
"As a junior and an amateur, I'd walk onto the putting greens and feel like I was the guy there to beat, and it took me a long time to really try and feel that way out here," Day said on Tuesday.
"I'm not saying that I feel that way all the time but especially when I was playing some really good golf at the PGA, the Barclays, I felt like I was the guy to beat.
"I always thought that I had the skills to play and win at the highest level and be competitive, but mentally I think the last piece of the puzzle was to really believe. Everyone out here is a good golfer. Everyone can be great," Day said.
"The biggest thing that separates the best players in the world from the good players is upstairs.”
The Aussie has the advantage of being great buddies with Tiger Woods. Woods has helped Day with his mental fears and pushed him to higher heights in his game. It’s worked quite well, he leads the points race and cannot fall out of the top five meaning a win next week in Atlanta will hand him the cash and the trophy.
Day will be hard to beat, but his closest pursuer, Jordan Spieth, feels very confident that he can get it done despite missing his last two cuts.
The bottom line from Spieth’s perspective is his game is fine. He’s not panicking. He just missed two cuts. They aren’t the first two that he’s missed and they certainly won’t be the last two.
“There wasn’t a letdown this year,” Spieth said Tuesday. “I just had two bad weeks. Just leave it at that. You’re going to have two bad days in a row every now and then.”
“I feel very confident about where I’m at right this second,” Spieth said. “As the week goes on, probably work more and more again try and peak for next week, approach it like it's a major championship.”
“The weeks before majors this year have been good weeks for me, so I feel confident about the way we'll perform this week, as well.”
The drama this week in Chicago will be immense. The competition will be off the charts with the best players in the world fighting for the $10 million first prize. It should come down to Jason Day or Jordan Spieth, but who knows, golf is a crazy game and Rickie Fowler and others may step up and steal it away from the two at the top.
