The third major of the year is upon us as the 144th Open Championship gets started this week at the “home of golf”, the Old Course at St. Andrews.
The Open Championship made its first visit to St. Andrews in 1873 and has hosted 28 editions on the Old Course, crowning such champions as Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus,Tiger Woods and Louis Oosthuizen.
All eyes will be on Jordan Spieth ( +550 ) who is gunning for the third leg of the grand slam after winning the Masters and U.S. Open earlier this year, setting the stage for this week’s exciting Open Championship. Spieth continues to dominate the world of golf in recent months and added another trophy to his collection with a win last week at the John Deere Classic. Spieth has never played St. Andrews but you can never count out the best player in the field.
The weather usually plays a big role in the outcome of the tournament and this year’s edition could play much different than the previous Open’s at St. Andrews. Tiger Woods ( +3024 ), who played the course on Saturday had this to say about the course conditions, “I wasn’t expecting it to be this soft. It’s going to be more forced carries than I was expecting coming into the event. We made ball marks on the greens. I don’t ever remember making ball marks around this place. It’s not going to get any faster. It’ll be on the softer side for an Open.”

Rickie Fowler ( +1611 ) loves the big events and picked up another win on another big stage last week at the Scottish open where he birdied three of the last four holes to edge fellow American Matt Kuchar ( +2550 ) by one stroke. The Scots love Fowler and cheer for him as one of their own which will benefit the flashy Fowler as the man in orange picks up his first major win.
Justin Rose ( +2043 ) will be everyone’s team this week, but let me be the first to tell you, he will not perform well and leave owners very disappointed. Firstly, his Open record as a pro is extremely modest, actually not good. Since his famous fourth place as an amateur in 1998, he’s never managed a top 10 and a missed cut at St. Andrews in 2010 is one of three halfway exits in the last five years. Secondly, what happened to him Gullane last week? T2 with 36 to play, he shot 8-over on the weekend and collapsed to 74th. Something is clearly wrong with the Englishman’s game and is why I am fading the wilted Rose.
Tommy Fleetwood ( +5125 ) is a mind-boggling 26-under for his last four rounds at St. Andrews. The kid loves the place! Those scorching numbers spread over two editions of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship where he finished T2 and T5. He was also T5 on his debut in the 2011 event. The surfer-looking Englishman has limited experience in the majors but impressed in his last start ( T27 in last month’s U.S. Open ) and since then he’s posted T11 in the BMW International Open and T10 at the Scottish Open last week. I don’t think he will win, but I do expect him to contend and compete at a high level.
