Superstar Jordan Spieth ( +375 ) and Iowa native and 2012 John Deere Classic champion Zach Johnson ( +900 ) are the betting favorites this week.
Spieth became just the sixth player to win the Masters and U.S. open in the same year and most people are surprised that he is playing this week with the Open Championship lurking a week away, but the kid has class and remembers that the John Deere Classic gave him an exemption back in 2013 when he didn’t have any playing status on the PGA Tour. Johnson grew up less than two hours from TPC Deere Run and considers this a home tournament.
Other notable players scheduled to compete include defending champion Brian Harman ( +3997 ), three-time John Deere winner Steve Stricker ( +3600 ), Kevin Kisner ( +1799 ), Ryan Moore ( +2600 ) and standout rookies Justin Thomas ( +3800 ) and Tony Finau ( +4000 ).
TPC Deere Run is the host course this week and it is one of the easier tracks on the PGA Tour. Five years ago Paul Goydos made history by shooting 59 and the same day. eventual champion Steve Stricker shot 60. We can expect the numbers to be low this week, as low as 20-under par. If you shoot around in the 70’s this week, you will be left in the dust.
The final Open Championship berth next week awaits the highest top-5 finisher who hasn’t already punched his ticket to St. Andrews.

Rookie Tony Finau ( +4000 ) is having a huge year. He's second on TOUR in rounds in the 60’s and top 15 in par breakers - two key ingredients this week to contend. He's made seven cuts in a row and they all have gone for top 25’s including T13 last week at the Greenbrier. The kid is long, like Dustin Johnson long and this could be the week he gets his breakthrough win.
Justin Thomas ( +3800 ) is also a rookie having a banner season. He's had the lead four times on Sundays and played in the final group twice. There's no doubting this kid. Last week at the Greenbrier he reminded us that winning golf tournaments are difficult and so is keeping concentration. He'll probably be roommates with his buddy Jordan Spieth again this week and should benefit from the positive vibes. He leads the TOUR in rounds in the 60’s and is in the top 10 in par breakers. Thomas is on the verge of breaking through and taking his game to the next level.
Bo Van Pelt ( +12500 ) is a forgotten man in the world of golf these days. He totally lost his game at the end of last year and the beginning of 2015 but over the last month or two has played some impressive flat stick which included a T7 at the Travelers two weeks ago. Van Pelt also has had success at TPC Deere Run posting multiple top 10’s including a T7 last year. Van Pelt offers gamers great value this week.
