Odds Analysis

Justin Thomas +1017

The best player in the world is Thomas, no matter what the World Golf Rankings say. If any player should be favored to win the Masters it should be Thomas and I think a case can be made he has some value at these odds. He is my selection among the top contenders

Jordan Spieth +1017

I sound like a broken record each week, but I just don’t get Spieth being listed among the favorites. He did play better last week in Houston but he still didn’t win. He has played Augusta really well in the past, but I still am not sold he has his putting problems solved. I think he is overvalued again this week.

Justin Rose +1017

Rose had a great chance to win the Masters last year but couldn’t close things out. He could get his redemption this week and he comes in playing well, with top five finishes in his last three starts.

Rory McIlroy +1117

I don’t know what to make of Rory, as he wasn’t playing that well until blitzing Bay Hill. When he is playing great he is capable of dominating. I just don’t know which Rory we will see at Augusta so he is a pass for me.

Dustin Johnson +1117

The World No. 1 has not really played that well of late and I think he is overvalued at these odds. History is also against him, as the last 10 winners of the Masters were not the World No. 1.

Tiger Woods +1216

Everyone is excited about Tiger playing the Masters, but he has not won this event since 2005. He has been great at Augusta throughout his career, but despite all of the excitement, this is not the same dominating Tiger of past years. He could still win, but this is by far the toughest field he has faced in many years and I just can’t take Tiger at these odds.

Jason Day +1418

Day is a lot like McIlroy for me, as he can be dominating when playing well, but you never really know what you are going to get. I will take a pass on him.

Bubba Watson +1895

There is definitely some value in taking Watson at these odds. He has won at Augusta in the past and he comes in playing well. He won at Riviera in February and he won the Match play event in Austin.

Rickie Fowler +2067

Fowler has contended a lot in majors, but he simply doesn’t find a way to win, so it is hard to take him until he finally breaks through.

Phil Mickelson +2067

There is no question that Mickelson is playing as well as he has in a long time but keep in mind that the last 10 winners of the Masters were all 40 years old or younger.

Patrick Cantlay +8562

The first of my two big longshots is Cantlay who won for the first time last November. He will be making his second Masters appearance and he could follow the example of Jordan Spieth who won the Masters in his second try in 2015.

Xander Schauffele +11250

I don’t understand Schauffele being listed at odds this high. He will be making his Masters debut, but he has proven time and time again he can handle the big stage. He has a ton of value at these odds.

Course: Augusta National Golf Club is a par 72 that measures 7,435 yards. The course was lengthened four times form 1999 through 2006, but there are no surprises for the players. The course is known for the magnolia trees and azaleas and greens that are perfectly manicured. The 72-hole record is 270 that was set in 1997 by Tiger Woods and equaled by Jordan Spieth in 2015.
