The first major is about five weeks away when the elite players in the game stroll down Magnolia Lane and prepare for the 2016 Masters. The azaleas will be in full bloom the second week in April and so will some of the players.
The players that are trending in the right direction include Adam Scott and Bubba Watson and, oh, by the way, both have green jackets in their closets.
Watson recently won the Northern Trust Open - the last time he did that - he won the Masters. Already one of the most creative players on the planet, he now is working hard on his mental approach and it seems to be paying off. No one, I mean no one, plays the game like Watson and when he’s on, he’s unbeatable. He will be a force when April approaches.
Scott recently had to switch putting styles and everyone thought it would take him some time to figure it out and some experts thought it may be the end for the Aussie. The so called experts got it all wrong. Scott was putting horribly with the belly putter so by switching to the conventional style, how could he putt any worse. he won the Honda Classic last week to put all the critics to rest and his stroke looked silky smooth. The Aussie is ready to add another green jacket to his closet this April.
On the flip side of the coin, two players are trending downward have to be Rory McIlroy and defending champion Jordan Spieth. Both have recently missed cuts and both will have the most pressure on them once April rolls around.
McIlroy has yet to win at Augusta. Year after year, he says the right things, but never gets the job done. His putting is average and his focus is a huge concern for his backers. After a missed cut at last week’s Honda Classic, he refused to do an interview. C’mon Rory - you have to take the good with the bad - time to grow up and face the music.
Spieth will have the task of handling all the outside pressure. This year there is a target on his back and it will be very difficult for him to defend his title in April. He will win multiple green jackets but not this year.
