PGA Championship Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. Quail Hollow is a beast that plays really long, so driving distance is going to be a key stat. Also worth noting at Quail Hollow are Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, Par 5 Scoring and Birdie or Better Rate.

The PGA Championship has been the one major that has seen some unpredictable winners. Eight players ranked outside the Top 100 in the world have won majors and four of those were at the PGA Championship. Four of the last eight winners of the PGA have been players ranked outside of the top 20.

Rory McIlroy -165 vs. Jordan Spieth

It is not a surprise to me that McIlroy is a solid favorite in this matchup. He loves Quail Hollow, as he has two wins on the course a second and a fourth. And even though Spieth won the Open Championship, I think he has had a ton of good fortune, as his driving and putting haven’t been great. I will lay the price and take Rory in this matchup.

Charley Hoffman -105 vs. Matt Kuchar

If you have followed the matchups on a regular basis you know that I like Hoffman. He continues to deliver each week and why not again at the PGA. Kuchar had his big effort at the Open but he doesn’t have great length and I think he could struggle at Quail Hollow. I will take Charley in this matchup.

Tony Finau -133 vs. Kevin Chappell

I love the length of Finau for this course and I think he could be in contention for the win on Sunday. He also ranks fourth in greens in regulation from off the fairway. I will lay the small price in this matchup.

Rickie Fowler -155 vs. Jason Day

Is it time for Fowler to get his first major win? He is in contention nearly every week and he has played well at Quail Hollow in the past. Day is simply not the same player he was last year and I don’t see him turning it around on this course. I will lay the price and take Fowler.
