Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth are co-favorites to win the PGA Championship, which begins on Thursday at Quail Hollow Golf Club. Spieth is trying to complete the career Grand Slam, as he won the Open Championship last month. McIlroy has won the PGA Championship twice, in 2012 and 2014 and he loves playing at Quail Hollow where he won his first PGA Tour title in 2010. McIlroy and Spieth are listed with odds of +725, while world No. 1 Dustin Johnson is next at odds of +1215 and last week’s Bridgestone Invitational winner, Hideki Matsuyama is the fourth choice in the betting at +1225.

Odds Analysis
Rory McIlroy +725
You can make a strong case that McIlroy should be the solo favorite. Spieth made comments to the media that McIlroy is going to be tough to beat on this course. “I would say Rory’s probably the guy to beat at this point. I played with him the first two days (at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational) and the way that he is driving the golf ball, if he continues to do it there, he just has a massive advantage over the field.”
McIlroy has two wins at Quail Hollow and a second place finish. He said to the media that he is not worried about who is the favorite. “He can be the favorite. No. Trying to take some pressure off himself, I see what he’s trying to do. I don’t know, jeez. I’ve won a couple times around there, I like PGA Championship setups . . . if I’m the favorite, I’m the favorite. I’m happy with that.”
Jordan Spieth +725
Spieth is going to get a lot of attention, as he goes for the career Grand Slam but I still don’t know that his putting is consistent enough to make him the favorite. If you have watched him this year you know that his iron play is superb but his driving and putting can be erratic. He has had a lot of good fortune this year and I don’t know that it continues at Quail Hollow.
Dustin Johnson +1215
We are finally getting a little value on Johnson but he still isn’t playing as well as he did early in the year. He has admitted his back is not 100% but his length is going to give him a huge edge at Quail Hollow.
Hideki Matsuyama +1225
One of my picks to win last week was Matsuyama and I think he will be right there again this week. He has finished in the top 15 in every major this year.
Rickie Fowler +1415
I seem to get caught up in the Fowler hype in majors and he continually lets me down. He should do well at Quail Hollow and he seems overdue to win a major but I am leery.
Jon Rahm +2550
I think there is a lot of value on Rahm at this number, as he should have a major edge over a lot of players because of his length. I don’t think any of the shorter hitters have any chance to win this week simply because of the length of the course and the weather.
Tony Finau +8050
My big longshot this week is Finau who has the length like Johnson and Rahm to do well on this course.
Course: Quail Hollow Club is a very difficult par 71 that measures 7,600 yards. Players will find the course a little different from the one that hosted the Wells Fargo Championship last year, as there are three new holes, No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5. Quail Hollow Club also has the famous “Green Mile” which is thought of as the toughest closing three holes on the PGA Tour.
TV Coverage: CBS and TNT
Notes:Last year it was Jimmy Walker holding off Jason Day to win the title. Walker played his final 29 holes without making a bogey. Eight of the last 11 major winners have been first-time major winners, with the two exceptions, Spieth (twice) and Zach Johnson. The weather forecast leading up to this event calls for a lot of thunderstorms which will make the course extremely soft.
