The United States is heavily favored to win their seventh straight Presidents Cup, as they are listed as a 3-1 favorite vs. the International team. The USA has a 9-1-1 record in the Presidents Cup and they are a perfect 6-0 at home. This year’s event will take place at Liberty National in New Jersey, so the U.S. will have the home-course advantage. When the U.S. has played at home their average winning margin has been 5.2. We went 2-2-1 with the matchups in last week’s TOUR Championship. Let’s look at the odds and picks for this week’s Presidents Cup.
Presidents Cup Matchup Odds
There are no matchup odds as we normally see them, as not all players will be playing every day. The team matchups for Thursday have been announced, so we’ll look at those and also consider the odds and picks on top American scorer and top International scorer.
Thursday’s Matchups
Hideki Matsuyama and Charl Schwartzel vs. Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas
Adam Scott and Jhonattan Vegas vs. Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar
Si Woo Kim and Emiliano Grillo vs. Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed
Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace vs. Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger
Jason Day and Marc Leishman vs. Kevin Kisner and Phil Mickelson
Presidents Cup Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. The competition has 12 players on each of the two teams. The competition begins on Thursday, September 28th and continues through Sunday, October 1. There will be five foursome matches on Thursday, five fourball matches on Friday, four foursome and four fourball matches on Saturday and 12 singles matches on Sunday. Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey opened in 2006 and is a par 71 that measures 7,328 yards.
I really like two of these matchups for Thursday. I don’t think oddsmakers can put up a line high enough on Spieth and Reed vs. Kim and Grillo. Spieth and Reed should dominate this matchup, as they have a huge edge over Kim and Grillo and Kim has been one of the worst golfers on the PGA Tour since winning The Players. I will lay whatever the price is and take Spieth and Reed.
I also like Oosthuizen and Grace in their matchup against Koepka and Berger. Two years ago the pairing of Oosthuizen and Grace went a perfect 4-0 in the Presidents Cup.
I would lean toward Fowler and Thomas in their matchup against Matsuyama and Schwartzel but I would not lay a big price. I also would lean toward taking Scott and Vegas at plus money in their match against Johnson and Kuchar. I have no strong opinion on the match between Day and Leishman against Kisner and Mickelson.
Top American Scorer
Dustin Johnson +450
Jordan Spieth +450
Justin Thomas +750
Rickie Fowler +750
Patrick Reed +850
Brooks Koepka +1050
Matt Kuchar +1050
Phil Mickelson +1150
Charley Hoffman +1850
Daniel Berger +1850
Kevin Kisner +1850
Kevin Chappell +2050
I think there could be a little value on taking Spieth, as he is teamed up with Reed. If Spieth and Reed dominate their matchups as expected, then Spieth would just need to win on Sunday to clinch at least a tie for the top American scorer. Reed could also have some value at +850.
Top International Scorer
Hideki Matsuyama +450
Jason Day +450
Adam Scott +550
Louis Oosthuizen +650
Branden Grace +950
Charl Schwartzel +1050
Marc Leishman +1050
Emiliano Grillo +1650
Jhonattan Vegas +1650
Si Woo Kim +1850
Adam Hadwin +2050
Anirban Lahiri +2550
I really like Oosthuizen at odds of +650. He and Grace have been a great team and I think Oosthuizen will do really well on this course in New Jersey, as it favors length off the tee.
