Presidents Cup Teams and Odds

The Presidents Cup gets underway in late September at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey with the United States team more than a 2-1 favorite to defeat the International team. The U.S. team is loaded, as they have arguably the best three players in the world in Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. The International team does have Hideki Matsuyama and Jason Day, but the U.S. team is simply better from top to bottom. The United States has nine wins in this event that began in 1994, while the International team has just one win. The teams tied in 2003.

United States Team

1. Dustin Johnson

2. Jordan Spieth

3. Justin Thomas

4. Rickie Fowler

5. Daniel Berger

6. Brooks Koepka

7. Kevin Kisner

8. Patrick Reed

9. Matt Kuchar

10. Kevin Chappell

The U.S. team is composed of the top 10 players who received the most FedExCup points from the 2015 BMW Championship through this year’s Dell Technologies Championship, with 2017 points counting double. Captain Steve Stricker will also add two players who are captain’s picks, with one of those picks expected to be Phil Mickelson who has been on every Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup team since 1994. The other pick will probably be either Charley Hoffman or Brian Harman. The assistants to Stricker this year are Fred Couples, Davis Love III, Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk.

The 2016 USA team is one of the strongest in history, as the lowest ranked player in the world rankings on the team is Chappell at No. 27. Johnson, Spieth, Thomas and Fowler are all ranked in the top 10.

International Team

1. Hideki Matsuyama

2. Jason Day

3. Adam Scott

4. Louis Oosthuizen

5. Charl Schwartzel

6. Marc Leishman

7. Branden Grace

8. Jhonattan Vegas

9. Si Woo Kim

10. Adam Hadwin

The International team is composed of the top ten international players from the Official World Golf Rankings as of September 4, 2017, except those eligible for the European Ryder Cup team. Captain Nick Price will also add two players with his captain’s picks. There is a good chance one of those players will be Hideto Tanihara who just missed out making it into the top ten. He would almost assuredly be partnered with Hideki Matsuyama in the Presidents Cup.

The International team features Matsuyama who is ranked No. 3 in the world but the only other player ranked in the top 10 is Day at No. 9 and the only other player ranked in the top 20 is Scott at No. 20. Depth is also a major problem for the International team, as five of their players are ranked outside of the top 25 in the latest world rankings, including Si Woo Kim who has missed the cut in four of his last seven events.

Format

There will be a total of 30 matches played in the Presidents Cup with the first two days (September 28-29) consisting of five matches of fourball and five matches of foursomes. The third day (September 30) has four matches of fourball and four matches of foursomes. The fourth day (October 1) has twelve single matches that will be played.

The last time the Presidents Cup was played it was a very close competition in 2015 that was won by the United States 15.5 to 14.5. The USA has now won six straight Presidents Cups. The 2015 team featured Spieth, Fowler, Kuchar, Reed, Bubba Watson, Jimmy Walker, Zach Johnson, Jim Furyk, Chris Kirk, Bill Hass, J.B Holmes and Phil Mickelson. The team was captained by Jay Haas and Fred Couples was the assistant.
