Puerto Rico Open - Preview, Odds and Predictions

Puerto Rico Open Golf Picks

If you like to bet longshots in golf, then this is your week, as the favorite in the Puerto Rico Open is Wesley Bryan at +1639. He is the highest ranked player in the field at No. 72 in the world, but he is a lukewarm favorite at best. And he is the only player in the field listed with odds of less than +2000. The marquee name in the field is Graeme McDowell, and he is the third choice in the betting odds at +2351. Let’s preview the event, look at the latest golf odds and predictions.

Course: This event takes place at the Coco Beach Golf and Country Club, which is a par 72 that measures 7,506 yards. It has been the site for the Puerto Rico open for the past nine years. It is a picturesque course that features man-made lakes in addition to ocean views. It is not a difficult course, as Hadley shot -21 in 2014. The fairways are wide and the greens are large, which means birdies are plentiful.

Tournament Notes

Chesson Hadley set the course record of 267 when he won three years ago. Last year it was Tony Finau winning this event in a playoff against Steve Marino. Ian Poulter and Rodolfo Cazaubon finished one shot back of Hadley and Marino. The last four winners of this event, and six of the last nine, have been first-time winners. Michael Bradley is the only two-time winner of the event.

Golf Picks

I don’t think there is a true favorite for this event, as first-time winners have been very common. I will mention the top three betting choices, as they obviously could win, but I am going against them. Bryan is the top ranked player in the field but I am not excited about betting him. DeLaet always seems to be in contention but never wins and McDowell is well past his prime. Of the three, I would take McDowell, but again, I really don’t like any of the top three betting choices.

Luke List +2551

This course really fits the game of List who is a big bomber. He is tied for first on the Tour in par-5 scoring and he tied for 15th last year. He could repeat what Finau did last year and get his first win.

Scott Brown +3003

Brown loves this event, as he is second in all-time earnings. He won this event in 2013 and he has two top five finishes and a tie for tenth.

Ian Poulter +3479

He tied for third last year in this event after leading heading to Sunday. He is one of the few golfers in the field who know how to win.

Longshots

I will go with Brandon Hagy and Chesson Hadley as my two longshots this week. Hagy is listed at +5500 and he has been decent in the last three PGA events which had much stronger fields than this one. Hadley is listed at +6500 and he has a track record of success in this event including a win three years ago.
