Quicken Loans National Matchup Odds and Picks

Rickie Fowler is favored to win the Quicken Loans National, which begins on Thursday just outside of Washington D.C. Fowler is the top ranked player in the field and he is featured in two of the matchups this week, as he is paired against Justin Thomas and Patrick Reed. We had a really good week with the matchups at the Travelers, going 4-1, so we’ll look to stay hot with four matchups at the Quicken Loans National, including two underdogs.

Quicken Loans National Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm is a lot different than it was when it hosted the PGA Tour from 1987-2004 and in 2006. All of the holes were redone and it is a much tougher test for the players. The course is a par 70, which means two extra par 4 holes compared to a par 72. Players who are accurate off the tee and hit greens in regulation should do well this week, but you can say that every week.

Rickie Fowler -171 vs. Justin Thomas

Fowler took the week off after the U.S. Open, which is exactly what Thomas should have done. Fowler leads the PGA Tour in adjusted scoring and he is fifth in birdie-or-better percentage. He is also seventh in strokes gained putting. Thomas didn’t even make the cut last week at the Travelers and admitted he was tired. He does lead the PGA Tour in par-4 scoring, so he is definitely a threat but I think he still needs a full week off and he said this week he will be playing new irons. I will lay the price and take Fowler.

Brendan Steele -133 vs. Tony Finau

It is easy to like Steele, as he has eight top 20 finishes this season. He is fifth on the PGA Tour in par-4 scoring and he is 13th in bogey avoidance. Finau is a good young player but his length won’t be a big advantage this week on this course.

Kevin Streelman +102 vs. Keegan Bradley

I am surprised Bradley is favored in this matchup. Streelman has top 20 finishes in his last three starts and he does well in par 70 courses. Bradley is playing better but he almost always struggles on difficult courses.

Billy Hurley III +117 vs. Luke List

This is another line that surprises me, as Hurley III is the defending champion. Yes, the tournament is being played at a different course this year, but Hurley III practices regularly at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm so he should have an advantage. I will take Hurley III at plus money to win this matchup against List who is ranked 132nd in the latest World Rankings.
