Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth are the betting favorites at this week’s U.S. Open live on FOX

2015-U.S.-Open-Betting-Online

World No.1 Rory McIlroy ( +605 ), the 2011 champion, and Masters winner Jordan Spieth ( +805 ) headline the betting field that is expected to include all of the top 60 in the world rankings.

McIlroy looks to get back on track after hitting a cold spell which included two missed cuts. Spieth seeks to become the first man to sweep the Masters and U.S. Open since Tiger Woods in 2002.

Defending champion Martin Kaymer ( +5550 ) decided not to head west early to play practice rounds and time will tell if that will cost the German who is in mediocre form to begin with after missing the cut in his last start at the Irish Open. I would stay away from Kaymer.

Chambers Bay Golf Club will host this week’s U.S. Open and from player’s feedback, the course has received mixed reviews so we really don’t know what to expect until the tournament actually starts on Thursday.

Ryan Palmer ( +10245 ) was not a fan of the Robert Trent Jones, Jr. layout and had this to say, “As far as the greens are concerned, it’s not a championship golf course. The idea of tee boxes is ridiculous. That’s not golf. It is a joke. I don’t understand it”.

Ryan Moore ( +4550 ) who grew up less than ten miles from the course and has played it several times has a different view and loves the course, “Honestly, I think it’s one of those courses, the more you play it, the more you enjoy it, he said. “there’s a lot of swales and slopes, and you can actually get in a little bit of trouble but still recover because there might be a slope that will kick it back to the hole. I have really enjoyed the course and am excited to get the week underway.”

Henrik Stenson ( +2550 ) may have said it best when he called the course “a tricked-up links course”.

We could see a British Open breakout during a U.S. Open. Chambers Bay’s mystique is one of a kind and you will find players losing their mind! I love that kind of golf, seeing the best in the world struggle, we may even see Tiger shoot another 85. Pars are golden this week!

Picking a winner is never easy, but there are three qualities that I am looking for in a player that will give them a chance to win the 115th U.S. Open.

No. 1: Length off the tee is going to be a huge advantage this week. Brooks Koepka ( +5248 ), who played in the U.S. Amateur in 2010 said that Chambers Bay is a “bombers paradise”. The course measures close to 7,800 yards and has three par 4’s that are 500 or more yards. The longer hitters will thrive this week.

No. 2: Patience is a huge factor in any event but most important in a U.S. Open. Everyone is going to hit bad shots and par is usually a great score, so the player that accepts his misses, makes a bogey or two, but doesn’t press to get them back in a hurry have the best shot to succeed at a U.S. Open.

No. 3: Attitude is everything in a major championship. Jason Day ( +4274 ) said this, “U.S. Open’s are all about controlling your attitude”. Jack Nicklaus said that when he played, he had 80% of the field beat before they even teed it up because the 80% were mumbling and whining about how hard the setup was. This week is no different, Chambers Bay will test every facet of every player’s game, but most importantly, every player’s attitude.

U.S. Opens are all about storylines and what better story would it be for Phil Mickelson ( +1415 ) to win his first U.S. Open title, on his 25th attempt and complete the career grand Slam. Lefty loves the spotlight, still hits it a mile, has the patience to grind over four days on an U.S. Open type course and most importantly has the best attitude on the PGA Tour. The stars are aligned for Mickelson to capture his first U.S. Open and join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods as the only players ever to achieve the career grand slam.

Byeong-Hun An ( +7249 ) is an interesting contender this week and offers the best value on the board. He recently won the European Tour’s flagship event, BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth by a whooping six strokes. An bombs the ball which will come in handy this week on the long layout at Chambers Bay. In his last major start, he secured a T26 at last years Open Championship. The Korean’s confidence is at an all-time high, his attitude is solid and the multiple rounds he played back in 2010 at the U.S. Amateur ( Semifinalist ) give the young man an edge heading into this week.

Morgan Hoffmann ( +30250 ) is no stranger to the Chambers Bay Golf Club having played there in the 2010 U.S. Amateur. Even if you put a dollar on Hoffmann, at +30250, the return is worth the slight risk and offers great value.
