This is an exciting week if you are a golf fan and one of my favorite events of the year to watch and wager on because the 2015 WGC - Cadillac Match Play tournament is the biggest match play event in the world.
Golf Channel and NBC will televise the event live starting Wednesday.
TPC Harding Park will host this year’s tournament and we welcome a new round-robin format that will keep everyone around until at least Friday, eliminating the “Wednesday Massacre” that has sent top draws packing after one round. Players now are grouped into 16 four-man pods, with group winners moving into a single-elimination bracket for the weekend.
Each four-man group will play round-robin matches on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The player with the best record in each group advances to the Round of 16 for single-elimination match play ( in the event of a two-way tie in a group, head-to-head results will be used as the tiebreaker; a three-way tie will require a sudden-death playoff ). After the three days of group play are completed, the Round of 16 will be played Saturday morning, followed by the Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon.
The Semifinals will be Sunday morning, followed by the Championship Match and Consolation Match on Sunday afternoon. Did you get all that? The bottom line is that fans are guaranteed to see the field in its entirety during the first three days of competition before players begin being eliminated, which means more matchups to bet. I already like this new format. More matches equates to more betting.

Anything can happen in the Match Play format and over the years it has. No. 1 seeds are 38 - 14 all - time at the WGC - Cadillac Match Play. By comparison, No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament are 124 - 0 all - time. Anyone can beat anyone on any given day, which makes the match play format so unpredictable.
Jason Day ( + 1215 ) has a chance to become the second player in the history of the Cadillac Match Play to win in back - to - back years. Day boasts a 14 - 3 record in this event.
World No. 2 Jordan Spieth ( + 905 ) is red hot coming into the event having recently won the Masters, but the young Texan has one interesting fact standing in his way this week. A No. 2 overall seed has never won this event.
Dustin Johnson ( + 2615 ) won the last WGC event held at Doral earlier this year and has played consistently on a weekly basis, but his record ( 2 - 6 ) in this format does not bode well for his chances this week. In fact, I don’t think he will make it out of the first round and highly advise you to bet against him.
