This week’s WGC-HSBC Champions in China is the fourth and final world golf championship event of the season and also the second leg of the European Tour’s four-tournament Final Series.
With prize money of $8.5 million, it is the most valuable purse on this season’s Race to Dubai in tournaments played on non-American soil. There’s more money up for grabs in Shanghai than at the Open Championship, go figure!
The 78-man field is loaded! Headliners include FedExCup winner Jordan Spieth +875, world No. 3 Rory McIlroy +585 and defending champion Bubba Watson +1772.
Other notable players include Americans Rickie Fowler +2223 and Patrick Reed +3684, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson +2150, German Martin Kaymer +3750 and Spain’s Sergio Garcia +4047.
This is the seventh edition of the event and all but one of the previous six were held at this week’s venue, Sheshan International Golf Club. The course is a tree-lined par 72 measuring 7,261 yards and featuring Bent grass greens. Water comes into play on 11 of the 18 holes. Cashing in on the four par 5s is key and as Bubba Watson proved last year. He played them in 14-under last year.

Shane Lowry +3700 looks to join Tiger Woods as the only player ever to win back-to-back WGC events when he tees it up this week in China. The Irishman is hungry to get back to the winner’s circle and is currently in great form as he’s finished runner-up in the British Masters and T8 in last week’s Turkish Airlines Open in his last two starts. Lowry, at +3700, offers the best value on the board.
Patrick Reed +3684 is due to pick up a win. He had a look at Sheshan last year and came away with a respectable T22 when the course played tough. In his last two starts he’s turned up his game a notch with third in Hong Kong and another top 10 at last week’s CIMB Classic in Malaysia. The American made just two bogeys all week and if he gets the putter hot, look out! I am backing the cocky Texan this week in China.
There’s no doubt about it, Charl Schwartzel +8250 is one of the best ball-strikers on the planet, but he is also one of the worst putters. The flatstick costs the South African on a weekly basis and puts so much pressure on other aspects of his game, His game is erratic and a concern for backers. Stay away!
