Rory McIlroy looks to cash in back-to-back tournaments at THE PLAYERS Championship on NBC

PLAYERS-Championship.jw

Fresh off his win at the WGC - Cadillac Match Play, World No. 1 Rory McIlroy headlines THE PLAYERS Championship this week at TPC Sawgrass, and he’s rightly the favorite once again.

The WGC crown was McIlroy’s tenth win on the PGA Tour and has his eyes on this week’s PLAYERS Championship, an event he looks to win for the first time. Joining McIlroy in the field are the top 50 players in the current Official World Golf Rankings and 56 of the top 60.

Masters champion Jordan Spieth ( + 800 ) looks to get back on track after losing to Lee Westwood at the Cadillac Match Play last week. Spieth’s game and TPC Sawgrass should be a perfect fit. He drives the ball straight, has great imagination for the Pete Dye design, and is the best putter in the world.

TPC Sawgrass ( Stadium Course ) is one of Pete Dye’s finest works of art and one that put him on the map in the world of golf course design. The layout is unique in that it doesn’t have two consecutive holes going in the same direction. Doglegs were also designed to run in all directions, and the venue has both short holes and long holes that will challenge the world’s finest. Of course, you can’t forget the infamous No. 17, probably one of the most popular hole designs in golf.

Sergio Garcia ( + 3650 ) is coming off a disappointing performance in last week’s WGC - Cadillac Match Play where he didn’t make it through the first round, but if ever there was a place for Garcia to get back on track, it is TPC Sawgrass. The Spaniard has had huge success in his career here. He won THE PLAYERS in 2008 and has four other top five finishes, including a solo third a year ago.

Danny Willett ( + 12250 ) offers the best value on the board. The casual golf fan may have never heard of him before last week’s third place finish in San Francisco, but he is the best young player in Europe according to Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke who had this to say, “Danny Willett is the best young player that we have in England and I look for him to do great things in the future”. I will take a crack with Willett at + 12250, especially on a track where anyone can win.

FADES

Martin Kaymer ( + 3500 ) will try to be the first player in the history of THE PLAYERS Championship to win in back-to-back years. Kaymer seems to be a one or two week wonder and this is not the week to back the German. In fact, he will miss the cut.

Keegan Bradley ( + 4050 ) entertained us last week, not with his golf, but during a heated exchange with Miguel Angel Jimenez. The match was meaningless with both players 0-2 and neither having a chance to advance. Jimenez questioned Bradley’s drop and that is when things escalated. Bradley got in the face of the veteran, the two had a few words and that was the end of it. Golf is a mental game and Bradley’s mind will still be on the incident, hindering his performance, leading to a missed cut.

“The last three holes are probably the three most interesting finishing holes on the PGA Tour,” said a former Tour player. “Hole No. 16 is a risk/reward par-5 where most players can reach in two shots and you will see a few eagles, a ton of birdies as well as a few bogies. Hole No. 17 is the infamous island hole that puts the fear into every players’ minds and No. 18 is one of the toughest finishing holes on the planet. A two-shot swing is a real possibility on all three holes, which adds to the drama of what I consider the fifth major”.
