Tony Finau is listed as a lukewarm favorite to win the Safeway Open which begins on Thursday. It is the first tournament of the 2017-2018 PGA season and very few marquee names are in the field. Finau is the favorite at odds of +1400, while Phil Mickelson and Webb Simpson are co-second choices at odds of +1600. It is a wide open event, as the only other played listed at odds of less than +3300 are defending champion Brendan Steele at odds of +2500 and Kevin Na at odds of +2800. Let’s look at the odds and picks for this week’s Safeway Open.

Safeway Open Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. This will be the fourth straight year that Silverado is hosting this event and players have started to warm up to the course, as the scoring average last year was 70.827 and that was down about a full stroke from three years ago. Greens in regulation and scrambling are key statistics to consider when looking at the matchups.
Chez Reavie -124 vs. Keegan Bradley
Reavie has four top ten finishes this season and he made it all the way to the third leg of the FedExCup Playoffs. He has four top 25 finishes in his last six starts. He has finished inside the top 25 the last two years in this event. Bradley has been one of my go-against players in the past and I will go against him here in this matchup against Reavie.
Brendan Steele -136 vs. Ryan Moore
Steele is the defending champion and you could almost see it coming, as he finished in the top 25 in this event in 2015 and then in the top 15 in 2015. Steele had a very good season in 2016-2017 finishing 33rd in the FedExCup standings. He goes against a player in Moore who has five missed cuts in his last 11 events.
Martin Flores -110 vs. B Burgoon
Do you know who leads the PGA Tour in greens in regulation? Yes, it is Martin Flores. He is the first of our key stat plays this week, as he goes against Burgoon who is 75th on the PGA Tour in greens in regulation. I will take Flores in this matchup.
Lucas Glover -178 vs. Peter Uihlein
Glover is 6th on the PGA Tour in greens in regulation, while Uihlein hasn’t done much of anything this year and doesn’t even qualify for rankings. He hasn’t been in action since missing the cut at the PGA Championship. I will lay the price and take Glover in this matchup.
Luke List -141 vs. Chesson Hadley
List is 14th on the PGA Tour in greens in regulation, while Hadley has been playing for the most part on the Web.com Tour. This is a step up in competition for Hadley and List has the edge in our key statistic of the week.
