Safeway Open Preview, Odds and Predictions

Safeway-Open-Odds-To-Win---PGA-bm

The 2017-2018 PGA Tour season gets underway this week with the Safeway Open in Napa, California beginning on Thursday. Most of the world’s top players prefer to take at least a couple of months off, so it is wide-open field for this event. Phil Mickelson headlines the field, as he is listed as the co-favorite along with Tony Finau and Webb Simpson at odds of +1650. Let’s look at this event, Safeway Open odds and predictions.

Odds Analysis

Phil Mickelson +1650

Mickelson will try and keep the momentum going from his strong run in the Presidents Cup where he went 3-0-1. He played this event for the first time last year and tied for eighth. It is a little bit risky taking Mickelson to win this event even at these odds, as he has not won a tournament since 2013.

Tony Finau +1650

It is easy to like Finau this week, as he had eight top 10 finishes last season. He ranked 17th in greens in regulation and he was 16th in birdies-or-better. He also tied for 7th in par-5 scoring.

Webb Simpson +1650

It has been almost four years since Simpson won a PGA Tour event but he could break that drought this week. He lost a playoff last season to Hideki Matsuyama in Phoenix and overall had a good year, finishing 23rd in the FedExCup standings. He has top 10 finishes in three of his last five starts. The only concern, and it is a big one, is that he has never made the cut in this event.

Kevin Na +2250

Why not Kevin Na at a nice price this week? He lost in a playoff in this event two years ago and finished 7th last year. He has top 10 finishes in two of his last four starts overall.

Brendan Steele +2550

The defending champion really likes Silverado, as he tied for 21st in 2014, tied for 17th in 2015 and then won last year. The concern with backing Steele is that he has not played well recently.

Martin Laird +4050

My longshot this week is Laird, as he has made the cut all three times previously at Silverado and he nearly won in 2014, finishing in a tie for 3rd. He finished tied for 8th last year. He finished the year strong making the FedExCup Playoffs.

Course: Silverado Resort & Spa (North) is a par 72 that measures 7,166 yards. It is a relatively easy course that has seen some low scores recently. Scott Piercy shot a 62 last year in the first round and Brendan Steele broke the record for the tournament by shooting 270.

Event Notes

Steele won this event last year, as he got past Patton Kizzire, Paul Casey, Scott Piercy and Michael Kim. The previous three winners were Emiliano Grillo two years ago, Sang-Moon Bae in 2014 and Jimmy Walker in 2013. Four players who made it to the TOUR Championship are in the field this week, as Phil Mickelson, Webb Simpson, Tony Finau and Adam Hadwin are expected to play.
