Sanderson Farms Championship - Golf Odds and Predictions

The PGA Tour travels back to the mainland for the 2016 Sanderson Farms Championship. Defending champion Peter Malnati +5500, Ian Poulter +1500 and Patton Kizzire +1400 headline the betting field. The field is weak but the opportunity is not. Poulter makes his second appearance after having foot problems that sidelined him for six months. He has nine more exemptions left to earn exempt status. Kizzire plays well this time of year and a player to keep your eye on this week.

Last year’s runner-up David Toms +2200 is one of six former major champions in the field, joined by Angel Cabrera, David Duval, Lucas Glover +4000, Geoff Ogilvy +5500 and Retief Goosen +6100.

The tournament is more like a Web.com Tour event and a there’s a good chance that a few of the players on the leaderboard on Sunday you may have never heard of. Forty-five of the 50 graduates from the Web.com Tour are entered this week.

The Course: Country Club of Jackson was designed by the legendary Dick Wilson. The layout is old school, measuring 7,421 yards and plays to a par 72. It opened up in 1962 and has hosted this event two previous years.

Americans have ruled in Mississippi, winning 19 of the past 21 tournaments, including 11 of the past 12, so scratch all the foreign players off your list. Canada’s Nick Taylor’s win in 2014 snapped a string of 10 consecutive American winners, and England’s Luke Donald captured the 2002 tournament.

First-timers thrive in Mississippi with three wins in the past five years and nine total.

TV Coverage: Thursday-Sunday, 2:30-5:30 p.m. ET - Golf Channel.

ODDS ANALYSIS

For some reason, the name Russell Henley +1850 popped into my head for this week. The Georgia Bulldog will feel good on the Bermuda greens, which he grew up on and he always plays well in the South East.

Former Texas Longhorn Cody Gribble +8000 played well in his lone start on the PGA Tour by finishing in the top 10 at the Safeway Open. Although still a rookie on the tour and still finding his way, Gribble is primed to have a great week and season.

Don’t waste your time on Aussie Matt Jones +7000. Since holding off Jordan Spieth a year ago to capture the Australian Masters, he has totally lost his game. He drives the ball all over the place, his iron game is suspect and it’s a good spot to fade Jones.

Patton Kizzire +1400 has been close multiple times but has yet to win on the PGA Tour. He is an American and has never won, so he fits the mold of past champions in Mississippi. He also played golf at Auburn and will feel right at home on the bermuda putting surfaces.
