Sentry Tournament of Champions Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. There are only 34 golfers in the field and there is no cut. A total of 37 players qualified, but Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson decided not to play. 14 of the 34 players will be competing in this event for the first time. History is against those 14 players, as no first-time player has won this event in the last decade. Players in this event for the second time have done well recently, with Thomas winning last year, Spieth in 2016 and Patrick Reed in 2015. The course at Kapalua is pretty easy, with wide fairways and large greens. The course is a par 73 and last year it was the easiest to par on the PGA Tour at 70.375.
Rickie Fowler -165 vs. Jon Rahm
Fowler has played this event twice and finished tied for 6th and 5th. He finished 2017 with a second and a win. Rahm is definitely talented but first timers at Kapalua usually struggle. I will lay the price and take Fowler.
Daniel Berger -144 vs. Cameron Smith
Berger had his first crack at Kapaula last year and finished tied for 14th. The second time around is almost always better for the best golfers in the world and I expect Berger to play well. Smith has been tearing it up on the European Tour but this is a huge step up in competition. I will lay the price and take Berger.
Jason Dufner -153 vs. Si Woo Kim
It is hard to believe that Si Woo Kim actually won an event last year as bad as he played, but for one weekend he did everything right at the PLAYERS. I went against Kim in a lot of matchups last year and I am doing it again until he proves his win last year wasn’t a fluke. I will take Dufner in this matchup.
Chris Stroud -185 vs. DA Points
Points was a nice story in 2017, as he finally got a win, but he is in over his head in this event against a strong field. This is simply a play against Points because Stroud isn’t anything special.
