Tony Finau is a slight favorite to win this week’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. Finau is listed at +1415, while Webb Simpson and Patrick Cantlay are the co-second choices at odds of +2050. It is a wide open field, as ten players are listed at odds of less than +3000. Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. Summerlin is a relatively easy course, so birdies will be plentiful. Hitting greens and making putts is critical when scoring is low. Last year’s winner, Rod Pampling, led the field in strokes gained: tee-to-green. That will be one of our key stats to look at this week. You may not think of Las Vegas as being a place where weather can be a factor, but winds are expected to be strong this weekend and that will make distance off the tee more important than normal.

Tony Finau -141 vs. Patrick Cantlay

Finau is long off the tee which could be important on the weekend in the wind and he has played well in the past at Summerlin with two top 20 finishes. He tied for 11th last week so he is in good form. Finau also ranks highly in SG: tee-to-green, as he was 10th last season on the PGA Tour. I think Finau is simply a better all around player than Cantlay, so I will lay the price in this matchup.

Kevin Streelman +110 vs. Bubba Watson

Streelman has five top 25 finishes in this event including a runner-up finish three years ago. He comes in playing well with a tie for 13th at the Safeway and a tie for 10th last week. Bubba has not played this event since 2007. I will take Streelman at plus money in this matchup.

Scott Piercy +108 vs. Bryson Dechambeau

Piercy has six top 25 finishes in his hometown event since 2009. He turns 39 on Monday and I think he can be a surprise contender this weekend and we get him at plus money against DeChambeau.

Charley Hoffman -135 vs. Gary Woodland

Hoffman is the highest ranked player in the field and news came out this week that he is donating his winnings to the victims of the Las Vegas tragedy. This could be one of those destiny plays and it doesn’t hurt that we get a player in Hoffman who is extremely consistent and one who was 27th last year on the PGA Tour in Shots Gained: tee-to-green. I will take Hoffman in this matchup.

Harold Varner III -115 vs. Patrick Rodgers

Varner III ranked 50th on the PGA Tour last season in Shots Gained: tee-to-green, while Rodgers was just 169th. I will take Varner in this matchup.
