Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas lead the field for the Sony Open in Hawaii this week. Spieth is listed as the favorite at odds of +605, while Thomas is the second choice at odds of +855. Spieth finished 9th last week at Kapalua, while Thomas finished in a disappointing tie for 22nd. We are coming off a 2-2 week with the matchup picks at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Let’s look at the odds and picks for this week’s Sony Open.

Sony Open Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. Waialae Country Club is different than Kapalua but one thing is the same; experience is needed to win. The last 10 winners at Kapalua have played the event previously and the only player to win at Waialae since the inaugural event in 1965 in his first trip was Russell Henley in 2013. Wind should not be as much of a factor as it was last week, as calm conditions are in the forecast.
Jordan Spieth -163 vs. Justin Thomas
I know that Thomas is the defending champion but he didn’t play that well last week in Kapaula. I also don’t like the fact that Thomas doesn’t have his regular caddy. He will be using Phil Mickelson’s former caddy, Jim “Bones” Mackay for this week. Michael Grellar, the caddy for Spieth, said that Waialae is one of the best courses on the PGA Tour for Spieth. I will lay the price and take Spieth in this matchup.
Brian Harman -152 vs. Daniel Berger
I said in the odds preview that I need to start paying more attention to Harman and that is what I am going to do. He finished third last week at Kapaula and has four top 10 starts already this season. He has top 20 finishes in his last three trips to Waialae. I have respect for Berger, as he finished tied for 11th last week, but I really like the way Harman is playing right now.
Charles Howell III -133 vs. Jason Dufner
Howell has been really good in his career at Waialae, but has not yet won. He has four top 10 finishes in his last six trips. He has 11 top 15 finishes. Dufner was a huge disappointment to me last week and I just don’t trust him to do anything special. I will lay the price and take Howell in this matchup.
Chez Reavie +134 vs. Bill Haas
I am surprised Reavie is such an underdog in this matchup. Reavie tied for 8th in this event last year and he has been solid nearly every week on the PGA Tour. I think Haas is simply overpriced, so I will take Reavie as a nice dog in this matchup.
Jamie Lovemark -119 vs. Austin Cook
Lovemark has played well in this event the last two years with a tie for 7th and a tie for 4th. I don’t think Cook is ready yet to consistently play well in marquee events. I will lay the small price and take Lovemark in this matchup.
