The 116th U.S. Open - Preview, Odds and Predictions

World No. 1 Jason Day +650 is joined by defending champion Jordan Spieth +850 and 2011 winner Rory McIlroy +710 in a betting field that includes 59 of the top 60 in the Official World Rankings. The “Big 3” are the betting favorites but at least one of them will miss the cut this week, yes, I said missed cut!

All three players are playing well and all three have different strengths they rely on. Day has the all around game covered, he hits it a mile, putts well and has a strong short game. Spieth doesn’t hit it as long as the other two players but his mental game and course management skills are the best since Tiger Woods. McIlroy is the best driver of the three and probably has the most pure, god given talent.

The betting field is loaded with players that have the skills and patience to succeed this week. Dustin Johnson +1195 is a popular pick this week but never, I mean, never comes up with a win - always in the hunt, but never in the winner’s circle.

Danny Willett +3867 is the only man in the field that can win the first two majors of the year. Since his epic win at the Masters, he’s been average at best and I would stay clear of him this week. His game is erratic in many areas and he will not be a factor this week.

Phil Mickelson +2050 is trending in the right direction with a second place finish a week ago in Memphis but time is running out for the talented, risk taker. He will be a popular pick in all formats and it would be a great story for him to win and complete the Grand Slam, but will need a ton of luck to get the job done.

Others to keep your eye on include past U.S. Open winners, Jim Furyk +8125, Angel Cabrera +12550 and Lucas Glover +25000. They know what it’s like to win a U.S. open and certainly could do it again.

Oakmont Country Club is the host track and what a brutal course it is. The track was founded in 1903 by industrialist Henry Clay Fownes. The layout he created and tweaked through the years with his son, William, has set the standard for championship competition ever since. The nation’s first golf course to be recognized as a National Historic Landmark, Oakmont has previously hosted 15 USGA championships, including eight U.S. Opens 1927, 1935, 1953, 1962, 1973, 1983, 1994 and 2007. In 2007 no one broke par and this year won’t be any different - over par will win this year!

U.S. Open Facts:

A total of 11 amateurs are in the field, down seven from last year’s mark. Bryson DeChambeau is playing this year as a professional.

Just six defending Open champions have placed higher than 30th in their title defense. Hello Jordan Spieth.

Phil Mickelson, six times an Open runner-up, makes his 26th Open start as he chases the final piece to complete the career Grand Slam. C’mon, Lefty, time is running out!

In eight previous Opens at Oakmont, just 23 players have been under par after 72 holes. None did it the last time out, as Angel Cabrera’s 2007 winning score was 5-over. This year +10 may win!

ODD ANALYSIS

Who is playing better than Matt Kuchar +2553 ? He has played some great golf over the past month or so, always in the hunt with a worst finish of T6 in that stretch. He is coming in quietly under the radar and he has the goods to get it done in a major. This could be his week and is a green light in all formats.

Check out the stats on the PGA Tour. One player is in the top ten in total driving and greens in regulation - two keys this week at Oakmont. His name will surprise you, Lucas Glover +25000 is one of the best ball-strikers in the world. His putting is holding him back but on Oakmont greens, everyone is going to struggle and this could actually help Glover. At +25000, Glover is worth a look.
