The Northern Trust Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. Glen Oaks is a new course for most of the players and it is expected to be a tough test. It is a par 70 that measures 7,300 yards. It is known as a ball striker’s course and has been compared to Augusta National. The greens will be different, as they are Poa annua instead of bentgrass that is used at Augusta.

R. Fowler -101 vs. R. Mcllroy

This play is all about going against McIlroy who has admitted that he is playing hurt. Fowler has had six top 10 finishes this summer, two of which came in majors. He leads the PGA Tour in strokes gained: putting, one-putt percentage and adjusted scoring. I will take Fowler in this matchup.

P. Reed +119 vs. M. Kuchar

I am surprised that Reed is an underdog in this matchup. He played well at the PGA and he is the defending champion of this event, although it was played at Bethpage Black last year. Reed is eighth in strokes gained: putting. I will take Reed in this matchup at plus money.

K. Chappell -131 vs. Z. Johnson

One of the best times to take Chappell is when everyone is playing on unfamiliar greens. He seems to have a good feel for reading greens that very few players have seen. He ranks 23rd in strokes gained: tee-to-green. I will lay the small price and take Chappell in this matchup.

C. Hoffman -106 vs. J. Rose

Hoffman has been good to me in matchups this year and I will take him again in this one. He ranks 57th in strokes gained: approach, while Rose is just 96th. The price is short and there is no question Charley is having the better season. He has six top five finishes in the last six months and is 11th in FedExCup points.

G. DeLaet -124 vs. J.B. Holmes

I think another one of the key stats on this course will be strokes gained: approach the green and DeLaet has a big edge in this matchup over Holmes. DeLaet is 15th on the PGA Tour in this statistic, while Holmes is 101st. I will lay the small price and take DeLaet.
