Tiger Woods Update

Could we see Tiger Woods playing competitive golf anytime soon? The 14-time major champion has not been in action since January when he had to withdraw from the Dubai Desert Classic with back spasms. He previously had missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open. The last time he had a decent finish was at his own Hero World Challenge late in 2016 and he has not won an event since the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational. Woods underwent a fourth back surgery earlier this year and he was recently cleared to begin hitting golf balls again.

Tiger Feeling Much Better

Tiger wrote on his website in late May that his latest fusion surgery brought “instant relief.” He went on to say that he feels great. “I haven’t felt this good in years,” said Tiger, “I could no longer live with the pain I had. We tried every possible non-surgical route and nothing worked. I had good days and bad days, but the pain was usually there, and I couldn’t do much. Even lying down hurt.”

Tiger listed a number of other players who have had fusions or disk replacements and come back to playing competitive golf saying, “You mention the word ‘fusion,’ and it’s scary. Other guys who have had fusions or disc replacements like Davis Love III, Retief Goosen, Lee Trevino, Lanny Wadkins and Dudley Hart … They have all come back and played. But more than anything, it made their lives better. That’s the most important thing … that I can have a life again with my kids.”

Woods has not won since taking the 2013 World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational title and he is now 41-years old and not in shape to play competitive golf at a high level. He will, however, be serving as an assistant to United States captain Steve Stricker at the Presidents Cup in late September in New Jersey.

“It will be good to have him there. Guys are looking forward to it and I know he’s looking forward to it as well,” Stricker told Golf Channel, “He wants to get back in the mix, and I know he’s itching to get back out here, and this will be a first step for him.”

Not All Good News for Tiger

Woods has been in the news a lot lately even though he hasn’t played any golf. He was arrested for DUI on Memorial Day near his Florida home, as according to a toxicology report, he had the drugs Vicodin, Dilaudid, Xanax, Ambien and THC in his system. He was also in the news as nude photos of Woods and ex-girlfriend Lindsey Vonn were leaked onto the Internet.

Tiger was the No. 1 golfer in the world for a record 683 weeks from June 1997 to May of 2014. He is currently ranked 1,121st in the world.

Woods has the second-most wins in PGA Tour history at 79 and the second-most wins in majors with 14. He holds the record for highest greens in regulation percentage for a season at 75.2% set in 2000. He holds the record for best scoring average in a season at 67.79. He has the record for most consecutive rounds at par or better at 52. He holds the record for most consecutive cuts made at 141. To put that one in perspective, the man in second place is Byron Nelson at 113. Tiger holds the record for most years leading the money list at 10. He also holds the record for most career earnings on the PGA Tour at just over $110 million dollars. He has a record of 11-1 in playoffs, the best career playoff win percentage (91%) of any player with at least six playoff wins.
