World No. 1 Rory McIlroy and new Masters champion Jordan Spieth highlight this week’s PLAYERS Championship.
TPC Sawgrass and the famous “Island Green” will test the strongest and deepest field of the year in a tournament that has produced an array of champions, which adds to the drama on Sunday afternoon at THE PLAYERS. Short hitters ( Fred Funk, Tim Clark ), long hitters ( Tiger Woods, Adam Scott ) and average-length hitters ( Matt Kuchar ) have all won at TPC Sawgrass, proving that the Pete Dye design gives an advantage to absolutely no one.
When Rory McIlroy gets on a roll, watch out! After collecting his first WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship last week, it wouldn’t surprise me if he picks up his first PLAYERS Championship this week. After missing the cut in his first three trips to TPC Sawgrass, he has two top 10’s ( T-6, T-8 ) the last two years and is starting to like the course. He is the betting favorite and it will take a strong effort from someone else to keep McIlroy from the winner’s circle this week at THE PLAYERS.

Matt Kuchar ( -155 ) vs. Tiger Woods ( +135 )
Kuchar is the most consistent player in the world, always contending and always in good form. Woods, on the other hand, broke up with his girlfriend over the weekend and said that the breakup is hitting him hard, so hard, that he hasn’t slept in three days. Woods will have a tough time keeping his mind on his game and be a question mark to make it to the weekend. Kuchar will be rock solid and pound out another strong finish. Woods is no match for Kuchar this week, lay the chalk!
Lee Westwood ( -115 ) vs. Bubba Watson ( +100 )
Westwood has racked up five top 10’s in 12 starts at THE PLAYERS, and is great form having knocked Jordan Spieth out of last week’s Cadillac Match Play. The Englishman will be happy to see TPC Sawgrass where 12 of his last 16 rounds have been par or better. Watson has never finished higher than a T-37 and missed the cut three other times in his seven tries around TPC Sawgrass.

“One year I was playing well at THE PLAYERS, I think I was in the second or third to last group on Sunday and paired with Hale Irwin and Tom Kite and though I was never threatening to win, I was going to have a nice finish. I birdied No. 16 and now I walk to the famous No. 17 and let me tell you, that is a scary walk. The pin was on the right like it always is on Sunday’s, I got a little quick and chunked it right into the water, made double bogey and ruined my week. Every player will have a lump in their throat when the ball is in the air on that hole. It is the scariest shot the player’s will face all year.”
