The FedExCup Playoffs conclude this weekend with the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, as the top 30 players go for the title. Jordan Spieth is listed as the favorite to win this event at odds of +450, while Dustin Johnson is the second choice at odds of +750. If any of the top five players in the FedExCup standings win this event, that player will win the FedExCup. Odds Analysis
Jordan Spieth +450
It is hard to argue with Spieth as the favorite, as he is a former winner of this event and one of the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour. He won this event two years ago to take the FedExCup title and he loves playing in pressure situations. He has also played very well in the state of Georgia in his career.
Dustin Johnson +750
Johnson has the distance to overpower any course he plays but he has been inconsistent of late. It looked like he was back to being great, as he won The Northern Trust but then he finished tied for 18th and tied for 33rd in the last two events. He could turn it back on this week and win but I think he is overvalued at these odds.
Rickie Fowler +850
Fowler has finished in the top 12 at East Lake the last two times he has played there. He almost always seems to be in contention in big events and he might just be able to steal this one and take the title. Fowler can win the FedExCup if he wins the Tour Championship and Spieth finishes tied for 2nd or worse. If anyone outside the top 5 is going to win the FedExCup it could be Fowler.
Justin Thomas +1050
I am a bit surprised Thomas doesn’t have lower odds, as he has won five times this season. He finished tied for 6th in this event last year and he is probably going to win Player of the Year. I think he has a lot of value at odds of +1050 and he is one of my two picks to win.
Jon Rahm +1150
Rahm can actually win the FedExCup if he wins the Tour Championship. I don’t know if it happens, as Rahm has yet to show he can control his emotions on the big stage and even though he has a lot of high finishes this season, he has just one win. I will look elsewhere.
Marc Leishman +1850
Leishman was great last week at the BMW Championship but it is extremely difficult to follow up a great week with another one. I just can’t see Leishman winning in back-to-back weeks, so I will go against him.
Course: The TOUR Championship takes place at East Lake Golf Club which is a par 70 that measures 7,385 yards. It opened in 1908 as the Atlanta Athletic Club and is known as the course where Bobby Jones learned how to play golf. The course hosted the TOUR Championship for the first time in 1998 and has hosted the event every year since 2004.
Notes: Last year it was Rory McIlroy winning this event to take the FedExCup title. He had to go four extra holes to win a playoff against Ryan Moore and Kevin Chappell. McIlroy benefited from Moore missing an 8-foot birdie putt on No. 18 that would have won the tournament and given Dustin Johnson the FedExCup. The last seven FedExCup champions have won the title by winning the TOUR Championship.
