Travelers Championship Preview, Odds and Predictions

2017-GOLF-Travelers-Championship-Bet-Online

Normally after a major championship we don’t get a strong field but that is not the case this week, as six of the Top 20 players in the world are playing in the Travelers Championship including two players, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day, who missed the cut at least week’s U.S. Open. They are joined by Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed and Paul Casey. Spieth and McIlroy are listed as co-favorites, at odds of +950.

Odds Analysis

Jordan Spieth +950

The overall game of Spieth is excellent but he still hasn’t figured out his putting. He leads the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Approaching the Green and he leads the Tour in proximity to the hole on approach. I still am not taking Spieth to win until he figures out his putting, but when he does I will start backing him on a regular basis.

Rory McIlroy +950

It was obvious that Rory was not ready to play at the U.S. Open. He needed to play a lot more golf to get ready for the major. The concern with taking Rory is the same as last week, his rib injury and his lack of competitive golf of late. It may not be long before Rory is back in top form but I don’t know that it will be this week.

Jason Day +1150

I was shocked at how poorly Day played last week at the U.S. Open. He had a terrible opening round and then just mailed it in late in the second round. I thought he had his mental game in shape to win again but that was not the case. I was fooled by Day last week and it is not happening again this week.

Justin Thomas +1450

Thomas had a record setting third round at the U.S. Open but then couldn’t follow it up in the fourth round. I find it hard to believe he can put the U.S. Open behind him in just one week but Thomas does have the talent to do it. I think he is overvalued at these odds, so I won’t be taking him.

Paul Casey +2250

It would not be a surprise to see Casey contend this week. He lost in a playoff in this event two years ago to Bubba Watson. He tied for 17th last year even though he had a poor closing round. I think Casey has some value at odds of +2250.

Patrick Reed +2850

Reed had a poor final round at the U.S. Open but he is definitely playing better than he did early in the year. He has five Top 25 finishes in his last six starts. He is a live darkhorse this week.

Daniel Berger +3550

I couldn’t decide between Berger and Leishman for my longshot this week so I am putting both of them in here. Berger was tied for the lead last year in this event after 54 holes. He may be able to finish the job this year.

Marc Leishman +3550

Leishman won his first PGA Tour title five years ago in this event. He had a tie for 9th last year and he is playing well this season, ranking seventh in adjusted scoring on the PGA Tour.

Course: TPC River Highlands is a par 70 that measures 6,841 yards. The course features a four-acre lake, which affects shots on No. 15, No. 16 and No. 17. Scoring is normally good at TPC River Highlands, and last year it was Jim Furyk shooting a PGA Tour record 58 in the fourth round.

TV Coverage: CBS and Golf Channel

Notes: Russell Knox won last year’s event, but most people don’t even remember that he won the tournament because Jim Furyk shot his record 58 in the final round. Knox started the final round three shots behind Daniel Berger but Berger had four straight bogeys to start the back nine. Knox was able to hold off Jerry Kelly for the win.

Six of the past 11 winners of the Travelers Championship have been first-time winners on the PGA Tour.
