Charley Hoffman will look to defend his title at the TPC San Antonio’s AT&T Oaks Course this week. Hoffman was able to outlast Patrick Reed to win last year and Hoffman is again one of the top contenders, as he is listed as the second choice in the betting at odds of +2399. The favorite to win this week is Matt Kuchar at odds of +2060. We split our matchups last week, going 2-2 after going 2-1 the previous week. Let’s look at this week’s matchups for the Valero Texas Open.

Valero Texas Open Matchup Picks
Before we get into the picks we’ll look at what is needed to win in San Antonio. The course is 7,434 yards and is a par 72. It has three par 5’s that are longer than 590 yards so distance would seem to be of importance, but winners haven’t always been bombers. The wind at San Antonio can cause all kinds of trouble so scramblers tend to do well and golfers who have strong wedge games usually do well in this event. Last year when Hoffman got the win he hit 68% of greens in regulation and he was fourth in strokes gained putting. He also was eighth in scrambling from the sand.
Charley Hoffman +130 vs. Matt Kuchar
I really don’t see Kuchar being favored in this matchup. If you look at the odds to win the event he is just barely listed ahead of Hoffman. Kuchar seems to play well for a couple of rounds each week but he has yet to really put together four solid rounds. Hoffman has been great in this event with a win and six other finishes in the top 13. I like Hoffman at plus money.
Charley Hoffman +105 vs. Brooks Koepka
I am all-in on Hoffman this week and I don’t understand these odds either, as I think he should be favored against Koepka. It is rare when I like two underdogs in a week but that is the case this week, although both of the picks are on the same player.
Daniel Summerhays -149 vs. Ian Poulter
The signs are good for Summerhays in this matchup, as he made the cut at the Masters and at last week’s RBC Heritage. He has thrived at San Antonio with a seventh, second, fourth and 13th place finish. He goes against Poulter who needs to finish in the Top 30 to keep his PGA Tour card.
Ryan Palmer -120 vs. Billy Horschel
Palmer has played well in the win in the past and he is 6 for 7 in made cuts in this event including three top 10 finishes. He tied for fourth last year in this tournament. I think this is a fair price against Horschel who has not played well in his last two tournaments.
