Valspar Championship - Preview, Odds and Predictions

World No. 1 Jordan Spieth +565 headlines a field that boasts three of the top ten in the current golf rankings. Henrik Stenson and Patrick Reed are the other two players in the top ten. Spieth is back to defend and is still searching to regain his form that produced last year’s remarkable play. Stenson is always a force and should thrive on the tough venue and Reed has been off, way off and needs to get back on track.

Other notable players scheduled to compete include Danny Willett +2050, Branden Grace +4050, Jason Dufner +4050 and 2012 winner Luke Donald +4050.

Innisbrook Resort - Copperhead course will host this year’s event and has done so since the tournament’s first year in 2000. The layout measures 7,340 yards and plays to a par 71. What makes Innisbrook different than most Florida courses is it is actually a hilly course. The Copperhead winds through rolling, tree-lined terrain and ranks high among PGA TOUR players for its old school style feel. Ball-strikers and scrambling masters thrive at Copperhead. The closing three holes make up the “Snake Pit” – two bruising par-4s sandwiched around the 215-yard 17th. The closing holes were ranked the fourth toughest closing stretch on the PGA Tour a year ago, averaging 4,02 over par.

No player has ever won the Valspar Championship back-to-back, so Spieth may have a tough time defending. Furthermore, the defending champions have not fared well, just three of 15 defending titleholders have finished in the top 10 a year later.

TV Coverage: Thursday-Friday, 3-6 p.m. ET - Golf Channel. Saturday-Sunday, 1-3 p.m. - GC, 3-6 p.m. - NBC.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Harris English +3550 played solid last week by finishing 10th and is trending in the right direction. In his last four starts he has finished no worse than T39, which includes a third place finish at the Waste Management. The former Clemson Tiger is money this week in the golf matchups.

Ryan Moore +5250 offers gamers the best value on the board. He loves playing at Copperhead where he has been in the mix on a couple of occasions, including last year where he was leading the tournament with 15 holes to go before settling for a top five finish.

Will Wilcox +15250 is one of the best ball-strikers on the PGA Tour and that should come in handy this week playing one of the toughest tracks on tour. He tied for 33rd a year ago and will improve on that finish and could easily contend this week.
