Hideki Matsuyama is a slight favorite to win this week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. Waste Management Phoenix Open Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. It was all about greens-in-regulation and scrambling last year for Matsuyama and Simpson who ended up in a playoff. TPC Scottsdale doesn’t have a profile that really focuses on one thing but we do know that scrambling out of trouble has been one of the key stats to look at. Hitting greens and making birdies is the recipe for success in a lot of tournaments and that will be the case again this week.

Jordan Spieth -120 vs. Jon Rahm

It has been more than six months since Spieth won an event and as I said in the odds preview, I think that drought ends this week and it sure doesn’t hurt that Spieth leads the PGA Tour in GIR. I also think fatigue could be getting to Rahm who is playing his third straight week.

Webb Simpson -120 vs. Alex Noren

I find it hard to believe that Noren can put last week’s playoff loss behind him quickly, so I am going against him in his matchups this week. Simpson nearly won this event last year and he has four top 10 finishes in Phoenix.

Daniel Berger -130 vs. Alex Noren

I am going against Noren in this matchup as well. Berger tied for 7th in this event a year ago and he has a pair of top 14 finishes this season.

Zach Johnson -115 vs. J.B. Holmes

Johnson has five top 25 finishes in this event since 2009. He has six straight top 15 finishes to start this season. I know Holmes has played well in this event in the past but he is going to face more boo’s than he has ever heard in his life in Phoenix this week after his debacle of making the world wait last week at Torrey Pines. Holmes better have a thick skin because the gallery in Phoenix is loud and they will show him no mercy this week.

Ryan Moore -155 vs. Bubba Watson

I have been going against Bubba on a regular basis in matchups and why not? He hasn’t played great golf in a long time. Moore has three top 6 finishes in Phoenix.

Marc Leishman +155 vs. Justin Thomas

This is my underdog play of the week. Last week I hit with a +170 dog and this week I am going with Leishman. He has six top 10 finishes in his last nine starts. Thomas has had trouble at TPC Scottsdale and he actually missed the cut last year.
