Odds Analysis

Jordan Spieth +900

I think this is the week that Spieth gets back into the win column, as he has not won an event since last year’s Open Championship. He has played well in this event in the past with a tie for 7th and a tie for 9th. He has had two weeks off to get ready for this event and I expect him to be in top form.

Hideki Matsuyama +900

I think Matsuyama is overvalued at these odds. I know he has won this event in each of the last two years, but is he really good enough to win it three straight times? He tied for 12th last week at the Farmers Insurance Open. Matsuyama is a tough golfer for me to figure out, as he is usually all or nothing. No player has won the same event on the PGA Tour three straight years since Steve Stricker in 2009-2011.

Jon Rahm +1000

Rahm is going to be a popular choice with the fans this week as he is an ASU grad. He didn’t play well on the weekend at the Farmers Insurance Open, so perhaps fatigue is an issue. This will be his third straight week in competition and the last time he played three weeks in a row he finished in a tie for 27th.

Rickie Fowler +1000

Rickie is a popular golfer with the fans but he has yet to win this event. He has three top-five finishes in Phoenix. He just missed a playoff last year. He has the right type of game to do well and contend this week, as he makes a lot of birdies. I think Rickie is worth a shot this week at odds of +1000.

Justin Thomas +1100

Thomas has missed the cut in this event in two straight years. He was okay in Hawaii but he has not looked quite the same as he did last season when he was the Player of the Year on the PGA Tour.

Marc Leishman +2850

Leishman was in contention last year in this event before a closing 73. He tied for 8th last week and he has top-10 finishes at the Sentry and in Australia before that.

Webb Simpson +3250

I am really surprised Simpson is listed at odds this high. Other people must be surprised as well, as the odds on Simpson have dropped from +5000 to +3250. He lost in a playoff in this event last year and he has six straight top 15 finishes in this tournament.

Daniel Berger +3550

Berger has two top 10 finishes in Phoenix in three starts. He took two weeks off after playing in Hawaii, so like Spieth he should be raring to go.

Course: TPC Scottsdale is a par 71 that measures 7,261 yards. It is the loudest course on the PGA Tour, with more than a half a million people attending the event throughout the week. The par-3 16th hole has a “Coliseum” that goes around the hole and is simply insane. This tournament has seen a playoff in each of the last two years. Birdies will be plentiful, as the winning score in this tournament has been double-digits every year and eight times since 1987 there has been a winning score of 20-under or better.
