Wells Fargo Championship Preview, Odds and Predictions

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is a solid favorite to win the Wells Fargo Championship, which begins on Thursday. Johnson has not played since winning the WGC Match Play, as he pulled out of the Masters due to injury. If Johnson is at full strength he is the clear standout in this event, as he is the only played ranked in the Top 10 in the field and only five other players ranked in the Top 20 are in this tournament. Let’s look at this event which is taking place at Eagle Point Golf Club instead of Quail Hollow Club this year.

Odds Analysis

Dustin Johnson +500

If Johnson is healthy then the odds of +500 may actually be generous, as Johnson comes into this event having won his last three starts. Johnson leads the PGA Tour in driving and greens in regulation. He is also 20th in scrambling. He is the clear choice to win this week, even at odds of +500.

Jon Rahm +1250

The second choice in the betting is Rahm, who was red-hot before the Masters. He won the Farmers Insurance Open in just his 12th PGA Tour start. Rahm does everything well, as he ranks 21st in driving, 15th in greens in regulation and 17th in birdie conversion percentage. The problem if you like Rahm is that Johnson does those things just a little bit better.

Adam Scott +1650

Scott has finished in the Top 15 in five of his seven PGA Tour starts this year. He has struggled at times this year with a few bad rounds that have taken him out of contention. Until he shows he can put four really good rounds together I am not taking him.

Paul Casey +1850

Casey has four finishes in the Top 25 in his last five starts. He has not won anywhere since 2014 and he has not won on the PGA Tour since 2009. I will be looking elsewhere.

Phil Mickelson +2550

Mickelson has been very consistent in this event with 11 finishes in the top 12 in his 13 tries. He is still looking for his first win in this tournament. There is a little bit of value in taking Mickelson this week, as the field is not that strong past Johnson.

Wesley Bryan +3250

My lonshot this week is Bryan who goes under the radar a lot. He is ranked in the Top 40 in the world and he is up to 14th in the latest FedEx Cup rankings. He is from the Wilmington area and should know this course well.

Course: Eagle Point Golf Club is a par 72 that measures 7,259 yards. It opened in 2000 and will be taking the place of Quail Hollow Club this year because Quail Hollow is hosting the PGA Championship in August. Eagle Point is ranked in the Top 100 in Golf Digest’s Top 100 list.

TV Coverage: CBS and Golf Channel

Notes: James Hahn shocked everyone by winning this event last year at Quail Hollow. He was not even on the radar, as he had missed the cut in his previous eight tournaments. Hahn got past a strong field that included Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Justin Rose. Hahn defeated Roberto Castro in a playoff to get his second PGA Tour win. Five of the previous seven Wells Fargo Championship winners have not made the cut the following year.
