WGC Bridgestone Invitational Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. Firestone is really long for a par 70, as it measures 7,400 yards. There are only two par fives and only one of those holes was considered a birdie hole last year. Length is definitely important, but the fairways are narrow, so accuracy has also proven to be critical. Players who do well on par 4’s and avoid bogey’s do well at Firestone.
J. Rahm +102 vs. B. Koepka
Firestone should be a great course for Rahm with his length. Koepka is definitely playing well but he withdrew last year from this event after tying for 6th two years ago. Rahm finished tied for 3rd and 2nd in his two previous WGC events. I will take Rahm in this matchup.
A. Scott +110 vs. S. Garcia
Scott has played this event every year since 2003 and he has a win and five other finishes in the top 14. Garcia has done little at Firestone in his career, finishing outside of the top 20 a total of 11 times. He recently got married and it is hard to see how he will be focused for this event. I will take Scott at plus money.
R. Cabrera Bello +120 vs. J. Thomas
Why is Thomas favored in this matchup? He has missed his last three cuts and wasn’t anything special last year at Firestone when he tied for 33rd. Cabrera-Bello leads the PGA Tour in Shots Gained: Putting and he is playing well, with a win and a tie for fourth in his last two starts. I will take Cabrera Bello at plus money.
C. Hoffman -120 vs. G. Woodland
One of my favorite players to back each week is Hoffman who nearly won last week in Canada. He has three top 8 finishes in his last five starts. This will be his fifth appearance in this event and he finished in the top 20 last year. I will lay the price and take Hoffman in this matchup.
