All of the world’s best players are in the field this week for the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, which begins on Thursday at Firestone Country Club in Akron Ohio. Open Championship winner Jordan Spieth is listed as the favorite at +850, while World No. 1 and defending champion Dustin Johnson is the second choice at odds of +950. Johnson is looking to become the first player in history to win three WGC titles in the same year.

Odds Analysis

Jordan Spieth +850

Spieth is up to No. 2 in the world after his win at the Open. He is looking for his third straight victory, as he won the Travelers before winning the Open. This will be the fourth time he is playing the Bridgestone Invitational and he has improved every time, as he was 49th in his first try, tied for 10th two years ago and tied for 3rd last year. He leads the PGA Tour in adjusted scoring and birdie average. He is a deserving favorite this week.

Dustin Johnson +950

Johnson definitely has the length to take advantage of Firestone but his game is still a little bit off. He admitted that he is still bothered a bit by his back. He has not won since the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play. I think he is overvalued at these odds.

Rory McIlroy +1050

Rory won this tournament in 2014 and didn’t play the last two years. He has four top ten finishes in this tournament in his last six trips, but I think he is overvalued this week because he is not expected to have caddie J.P. Fitzgerald for the first time in nine years. It is hard to take a player who just fired his caddie.

Brooks Koepka +1550

Koepka played well at the U.S. Open and at the Open Championship but I don’t know that he is yet on the level of Spieth and Johnson.

Rickie Fowler +1650

Fowler has seven finishes in the Top 10 this year and he is 2nd in scoring average. The surprise is that Fowler has just one win this season. He has four top ten finishes in this event.

Hideki Matsuyama +1650

Matsuyama could have some value this week, as he is 5th on the PGA Tour in scoring average and third in birdie average. The only concern in backing him at Firestone is that he has had one bad round in the last two years that has ruined his chances.

Jon Rahm +2050

Rahm has the length to do really well at Firestone. He can struggle at times on courses that demand precision but he should have a field day at Firestone. I think he has a lot of value at odds of +2050.

Adam Scott +2850

My longshot this week is Scott who won this event in 2011. He has shown signs of life of late and he could be worth a shot at nice odds on a course that he likes.

Course: Firestone Country Club (South) is a par 70 that measures 7,400 yards. The course is one of the longest on the PGA Tour schedule each year and definitely favors long hitters.

TV Coverage: CBS and Golf Channel

Notes:All of the world’s top 50 players are expected to be in the field. A total of eight players are making their debuts in a World Golf Championships event including Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele. Last year it was Johnson coming from behind on the weekend to defeat Scott Piercy and Jason Day.
