The PGA Tour heads to Mexico this week for the WGC Mexico Championship, with Dustin Johnson listed as the favorite. Most of the world’s top players are in the field for this event that will not have a cut. The field is limited to 65 of the world’s top players, so it is definitely a who’s who of golf. We went 3-2 last week with the matchups at the Honda Classic last week. Let’s look at the odds and picks for this week’s WGC Mexico Championship.

WGC Mexico Championship Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. The Club de Golf Chapultepec is located 7,500 feet above sea level, so the ball really flies a long way. The course is a par 71 and it definitely favored long hitters last year when Johnson won the event. The surprising part about Johnson’s win is that he was just 27th in strokes gained: off the tee. He won by his work around the green and he dominated the par 5’s.

Tommy Fleetwood +120 vs. Jordan Spieth

I think the price on this matchup is based on reputation and not current numbers. Fleetwood is simply playing better than Spieth right now. Fleetwood is coming off a fourth place finish last week at PGA National. Spieth does have four top 20 finishes in five tournaments this year, but he is supposed to contend for wins, not top 20 finishes. I continue to say that until I see Jordan get his problems on the greens figured out I will look for good opportunities to go against him. And in this case we get plus money on Fleetwood.

Dylan Frittelli -105 vs. Louis Oosthuizen

I have no idea why Frittelli is not listed as a solid favorite in this matchup. It is the exact same matchup as last week and I am going with Frittelli again. He finished 11th last week and he has 10 top 20 finishes in his last 12 starts. I will take Frittelli again this week.

Patrick Cantlay -145 vs. Bubba Watson

I know that Bubba got his win at Riviera, but I am still not sold he is entirely back. I think Riviera really suited his game and we’ll see if there is a carryover effect. I think Cantlay is a budding star and I will take him in this matchup.

Webb Simpson -145 vs. Brian Harman

Simpson was second in strokes gained: putting last week when he finished tied for 5th. I was excited about Harman earlier this season, but he seems a little off lately. I will take Simpson in this matchup.

Jhonattan Vegas -130 vs. Shubhankar Sharma

I think Sharma is out of his league in this tournament. I know he has had some success on the European Tour, but since his early wins, he has not been that great. Now he gets a test against the best in the world and I think he will struggle. I will take Vegas in this matchup.
