Odds Analysis
Dustin Johnson +600
Johnson is the defending champion and a solid top choice to win this week. He had last week off to prepare for a course he overwhelmed last year. Johnson wasn’t that accurate last year, but he still finished sixth in GIR. He has shown a few chinks in the armor lately, as his game is not at the highest level, but he still has seven top 20’s in a row.
Justin Thomas +850
I had Thomas as a winner last week and he could definitely win again this week. He simply knows how to close out a tournament. Forget the fake hype about Tiger; Thomas is the player who should be getting the attention. He already has eight wins in his career.
Jon Rahm +1200
Rahm nearly won this event last year but tied for 3rd. He already has a win this year in the CareerBuilder Challenge. He does need to avoid going into the rough, as he tends to do, but he has the length and putting to win this event.
Jordan Spieth +1250
If you have read the previews the last few months you know that I am avoiding Spieth until he gets his putting figured out. I still haven’t seen any indications he has his trouble on the greens solved and until he shows me I am not taking him to win.
Rickie Fowler +1600
I think Rickie is overvalued, as he simply doesn’t win that often. I said it last week that Rickie is oftentimes a contender, but he rarely finishes the deal.
Tommy Fleetwood +1600
It is time to start paying serious attention to Fleetwood on the PGA Tour. He won the 2017 Race to Dubai and he continues to play well on the PGA Tour. He was in contention at the Honda Classic last week and last year he finished fourth in this tournament.
Phil Mickelson +1800
Phil would seem to be trending in the right direction and he was second in the field last year in putts per GIR in this event. Phil has a tie for 5th, a tie for 2nd and a tie for 6th recently.
Justin Rose +2200
You don’t see odds this high on Rose that often and I think he is worth a shot. He won three times in 2017 and he has the game to win in Mexico.
Alex Noren +2500
I simply can’t leave Noren out any longer, as he contends every week. He has been in contention twice already this season on the PGA Tour. He finished in third place last week.
Patrick Cantlay +3000
One of my longshots this week is Cantlay who tied for fourth a couple weeks ago at the Genesis Open.
Thomas Pieters +4000
Another longshot is Pieters, who tied for 4th last year in Mexico and he comes in playing well, with a tie for 5th in Abu Dhabi and a tie for 13th at the Honda Classic.
Dylan Frittelli +5500
I really like Frittelli at big odds this week. He has 10 top 20 finishes in his last 12 starts. Why not a shocker this week at odds of +5500?
Course: This is the second year for Club de Golf Chapultepec hosting this event in Mexico City. It is a par 71 that measures 7,330 yards. It is a course that plays much shorter than the distance because of the elevation in Mexico City. Johnson bombed his way to a win last year, but the course is lined with trees, so accuracy should be important. The best comparison in terms of a regular PGA Tour course could be Riviera Country Club, the host site for the Genesis Open a couple of weeks ago.
