You can watch the tournament live on the Golf Channel and CBS.
The last tournament before the FedExCup Playoffs begin is the Wyndham Championship, which begins Thursday in North Carolina.
The highest-ranked player in the field is Rickie Fowler at No. 8 and he is joined by PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker and Jim Furyk, who will be making his first start since he shot his record-breaking 58 at the Travelers Championship two weeks ago.
A number of players who were at the Olympics in Rio last week are in the field, including Patrick Reed, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Danny Lee. Ten of the world’s top 30 are set to tee it up on Thursday.
Top Contenders
The favorite to win the Wyndham Championship is Patrick Reed at +1600. He played well at the Olympics and he has had past success in this event, winning in 2013 for his first PGA Tour title. Reed has finished in the top 13 in each of his last five starts.
Hideki Matsuyama is the second choice in the betting at +2000. This is his first tournament since he finished tied for fourth at the PGA. He tied for 15th in this event in 2013, but missed the cut each of the past two years.
Fowler is the highest-ranked player in the field but he is the co-third choice on the betting board at +2200. This will be his first time playing in this event.
Ryan Moore is also listed at +2200, and he is coming off a win last week at the John Deere Classic. Moore picked up his first PGA tour win at the Wyndham in 2009.
Furyk shot his magical 58 two weeks ago at the Travelers and he is listed at +2200. Furyk has played this event just once previously and tied for 9th in 2011.
Jon Rahm is getting a lot of respect from the oddsmakers as he is listed at +2500, along with Brandt Snedeker. Snedeker got his first PGA Tour win at this event in 2007.
Webb Simpson and Bill Haas are also listed at +2500 while PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker is priced at +2800. Simpson won this event in 2011 and has finished in the Top 11 in each of the last six years in this tournament. Haas has three top 10 finishes in this event in the last four years while Walker finished tied for fourth in this tournament in 2012.
FedEx Cup Playoffs and Ryder Cup Qualification
This is the last event before the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin next week with The Barclays so much of the focus will be on players trying to make it into the top 125. Most of the players between 91st and 190th on the points list are in the field and all of the players ranked between 101 and 135 are in the field, save for Anirban Lahiri who is ranked No. 114. Last year, there were only two players who moved up enough to get into the top 125.
This will be the first time that both Americans and Europeans can get Ryder Cup points in the Wyndham Championship. It is a very important tournament because just the Wyndham and The Barclays remain for American players to score points for Ryder Cup qualification and this is the last event for Europeans to accrue points.
American players looking to move up this week are Fowler, Snedeker, Scott Piercy, Haas, William McGirt, Furyk and Jason Dufner as they are all in the Top 20, but they need to get into the top 8 for automatic Ryder Cup qualification.
Europeans chasing spots this week are Cabrera Bello, who is seventh in the standings, while Shane Lowry is 14th. Only the top five European players in points are guaranteed Ryder Cup spots.
Tournament Notes
The Sedgefield Country Club Ross Course is a par 70 that measures 7,127 yards. It opened in 1925 and was first used for this event, which was called the Greater Greensboro Open in 1938. The course was the host for the last of Sam Snead’s 82 wins on the PGA Tour. Carl Pettersson set the 72-hole course record for this event in 2008 when he shot 259. He also is tied for the single-round record of 61, which he shot that same year. That mark was matched by Arjun Atwal and Kevin Na in 2010, Tim Herron in 2012 and Brandt Snedeker in 2015.
Last year in the Wyndham, it was Davis Love III becoming the third-oldest PGA Tour winner in history as he shot a 64 in the final round to overtake Jason Gore and Scott Brown.
PGA Picks
There is a lot of value on Reed this week at odds of +1600 as he likes this venue and he comes in playing well so I will take him as my top choice. I’ll also gamble on two longshots with Simpson at +2500 and McGirt at odds of +3200. McGirt has finished in the top 15 in his last two starts in this event.
