The Philadelphia Flyers are road favorites on Tuesday night, as they visit the Detroit Red Wings in a game that can be seen on NBCSN. The Flyers are making a push to the playoffs and can’t afford to be losing to a Detroit team that has really struggled over the past month. The Red Wings had lost nine in a row before Sunday’s game in Colorado. Let’s look at this contest on Tuesday and NHL picks.
This war on the ice will go down Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Little Caesars Arena. The game will be televised live on NBCSN.
We'll have NHL odds at BookMaker.eu available for this and every game on the NHL Tuesday schedule.
Odds Analysis
The Flyers are going to be road favorites in this game on Tuesday, but it is a dangerous spot for Philadelphia. The Red Wings have been awful of late and the Flyers could easily look past Detroit. The Flyers are in a decent position in the Eastern Conference, but not entirely safe, as Florida is still a threat to catch one of the teams currently in a playoff spot. Philadelphia is coming off an emotional game at home against the Capitals on Sunday and now they have to go on the road against a bad Detroit team.
Philadelphia has been getting surprisingly strong play from goaltender Alex Lyon who is 3-2 on the season. The Flyers traded for Petr Mrazek from the Red Wings, but Mrazek has been inconsistent. It will be interesting to see who the Flyers play in goal on Tuesday. The players are starting to believe in Lyon. “Every time he plays he stands on his head for us,” Travis Konecny said. “He’s definitely earned his spot playing on our team.” The Flyers are 19-17 on the road this season, with 18 games going over the total, 17 going under, with one push. They are scoring 2.9 goals per game and giving up 2.9 per contest.
The Red Wings have been awful of late, as they had lost nine straight before Sunday’s game in Colorado. Detroit doesn’t seem to have quit, as the players are still playing hard, but they are just not winning. “I know we keep saying that but this group is close and those games bring us together a bit more,” Luke Witkowski said. “I think we’re all just really super frustrated.”
The Red Wings are just 13-22 at home this season, with 14 games going over and 21 going under the total. They are scoring 2.5 goals per game and giving up 3.1 per contest.
Special Teams
The Flyers are not very good on special teams, as they are just 18th on the power play at about 20%, while they are 29th in penalty killing at 75%. The Red Wings are also poor on special teams, as they are 22nd on the power play at 18% and 22nd in penalty killing at 78%.
Key Stat
The Flyers have done well in this series of late, winning 7 of the last 10 meetings including both games this season. The Flyers won 4-3 at home and 3-2 in Detroit. The Flyers have won four of the last six in Detroit, with four of the six going under the total.
Free NHL Picks
There is no question that almost all of the numbers favor the Flyers, but I don’t think this is a good spot for them coming off the game against the Capitals. I lean toward taking the Red Wings, but I think the better option is the total. The games between the teams in Detroit have been low scoring of late and the Red Wings simply are not scoring many goals right now. I will take this game under the total on Tuesday night.
NHL Odds: Red Wings 3, Flyers 2
