There used to be a point that several of the runners in the Kentucky Oaks would turn around in two weeks and race at the Black Eyed Susan.
This year though, there is only one entrant into the second leg of the Triple Tiara, and Include Betty finished eighth of the 14 fillies in that race.
ODDS ANALYSIS
1: Danessa Deluxe – 9/2
2: Pure – 10/1
3: Ahh Chocolate – 6/1
4: Gypsy Judy – 20/1
5: Include Betty – 5/1
6: Sweetgrass – 12/1
7: Devine Aida – 10/1
8: Luminance – 9/5
9: Keen Pauline – 15/1
FAVORITE TO FOLLOW
Understandably, this isn't a great field in spite of the fact that it is supposed to be one of the showcase races of the year for fillies.
Instead, there are no major graded stakes winners in the lot. That's why Luminance, who was second best at the Santa Anita Oaks in April, is the comfortable favorite in this race.
That said, Luminance can run with the big girls for sure. She has two wins and a second place finish to her career, and has never run slower than an 89 Beyer Speed Rating. She might need to top 100 in this one to win, but there is no precedent for anyone in this race doing anything of the sorts.
A trailer by nature, Luminance will do her best running in the last quarter mile or so of this race. She was a little uncharacteristic in the Santa Anita Oaks, running on the pace the whole way, and we think that's why she was ultimately beaten.
UNDERDOG TO WATCH
A favorite just about everywhere she’s gone, we love the price on Devine Aida. She was 6 to 1 at the Gulfstream Park Oaks in March and hasn't run since, and she hasn't been working out all that well either. That's why she's 10 to 1 in this race in spite of the fact that the field is basically the same size as what she is used to going up against.
There isn't a single 90 Beyer Speed Rating in her career, which is a concern for sure, but the oddsmakers have to be seeing something here in Devine Aida. That 6 to 1 price at the Gulfstream Park Oaks was the biggest price on her head in her career.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
Still, we're not sure that we have named the winner of this race yet. It's actually the second choice, Danessa Deluxe who stands out to us more so than any other. She's got a really good inside post on the rail, and jockey John Velazquez won't let her get into any trouble early on.
Danessa Deluxe came up late in the Gulfstream Park Oaks and nearly won, and we think that she is going to be in for another strong effort in this one. If she can run as well as she did at Gulfstream in her last start, trainer Jorge Navarro could have his biggest career win. Either way, this is a great race for bettors, and we think the 9 to 2 price on Danessa Deluxe proves just that.
Play Danessa Deluxe to win the Black Eyed Susan at 9/2
