To say that there is going to be "Sheer Drama" at Delaware Park on Saturday is an understatement. Seven strong fillies will all believe that they are going to hit the line first in a crucial midsummer 1 1/4-mile race at the Delaware Handicap.
ODDS ANALYSIS
1: Frivolous 3/1
2: America 8/1
3: Fortune Pearl 10/1
4: Flashy American 4/1
5: Sheer Drama 2/1
6: Rosalind 6/1
7: Joint Return 8/1
Seven fillies. Nothing near an odds on favorite. And no filly greater than 10 to 1. If that doesn't scream to you that this is going to be a great race, nothing will.
Sheer Drama is the favorite now, but we could see Frivolous taking that spot over by the time this race goes to post on Saturday. These two fillies have been matched up against each other twice before, and Frivolous has split the proceedings with her new nemesis.
FAVORITE TO FOLLOW
That said, there's a reason that Sheer Drama is the favorite here at the Delaware Handicap. She has been doing nothing but running in high end races of late, and she probably deserved better than second best in both the Fleur De Lis Handicap in her last race and second in the La Troien Handicap in May.
Sheer Drama has been sheer speed at times. She won the Royal Delta Handicap at Gulfstream Park in March with a blazing 99 Beyer Speed Rating, and she probably would have run into the triple digits if jockey Joe Bravo needed to use the whip on her; she won that race by 6 1/2 lengths.
We just love the fact that Sheer Drama has been a favorite virtually everywhere she has gone of late, and even though she isn't losing, the fact that she is still the favorite over a filly which beat her the last time out says something to us.
UNDERDOG TO WATCH
Rosalind is out favorite underdog in this race, knowing that she is going to be racing from way off of the pack to try to come up at the end and surprise.
Rosalind will break from the No. 6 post, which should put her in a good position to stay out of trouble early on. She doesn't have those blazing Beyers in the 90s which we have spoken about before, but she probably won't need to get that deep into the 90s to win this race.
Rosalind might only have three wins in her 15 career races, but at a price of 6 to 1, we would be willing to take a shot.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
This is going to be a bit of an awkward race, knowing that there isn't really a favorite who is going to get out of the chutes in a hurry. Both Frivolous and Sheer Drama will end up running from off of the pace, while Rosalind and the rest of this field want to run closer to the back.
In fact, whichever horse goes out to the front could be at a real disadvantage, particularly if the fractions are fast.
In the end though, Sheer Drama is the best filly in this field as we see it. We suspect that she will end up stalking the lead right at the outstretch, and as long as she is well-positioned heading into the far turn, she should hit the wire first and claim victory.
