The first name that clearly sticks out on this list of Belmont Stakes contenders is Epicharis. The Japanese three-year old champ went on to finish second at the UAE Derby to Kentucky Derby runner, Thunder Snow. There was a slew of hype for Epicharis to come to the United States and run at the highest level of three-year old thoroughbred racing, but things have cooled off in recent weeks. He was down as low as +400 to win the Belmont Stakes, but he's up to a price of +1000 at this point and really is a threat to be nothing more than a mid-pack colt.

That said, no matter the price, Epicharis is going to be the most interesting colt to watch. He's going to be out near the lead in the early going and is going to hope to be on the lead by the time he hits the far turn. That's been his M.O. over the course of his career, though of course, running in Japan and running in the United States are two totally different things.

Tapwrit is going to be a pony to watch out for as well. He's only +900, which isn't the greatest price in the world for a field that figures to have around 13 competitors. However, the breeding here is just out of this world. Tapit is the sire for this horse, and he's produced a number of great champions in distance racing. Tapwrit was sixth in the Kentucky Derby, and at a price of 27 to 1 at that. He's now down to this 9 to 1, and that's a relatively large overlay. The overlay though, could be justified. There's a lot of talk about Irish War Cry ( +300 ) now that he's officially entered in the race, but we think the disappointing Derby horse that could make a big impact here at the Belmont is Tapwrit.

The longshot with the biggest challenge on Saturday might be Multiplier. He's set at +1500. Most will assume that Multiplier is just going to be a rabbit for the Belmont Stakes. He's a starter for sure and is a good one at that, and he's probably going to be the horse that keeps Epicharis and Classic Empire off the lead in the early-going. We're keenly aware of the fact that most rabbits end up falling apart and finishing way at the back of the pack over the course of the mile and a half "Test of Champions."

That said, we've had plenty of these horses that were seemingly nothing but rabbits end up winning this race merely because they're the only ones that seem to have the distance in them. We don't know that the trailers are going to be able to make up the ground over the course of a mile and a half just like we don't know that the starters will. At a price of 15 to 1 though, there are worse bets on the board than Multiplier.
