Lookin at Lee ( -130 ) vs. Sonneteer
There are many out there who suddenly think that the biggest longshot in the Kentucky Derby field, Sonneteer, legitimately has a shot to be a contender in spite of the fact that he's a maiden. Don't overthink this one. He's a lousy maiden at that, and he's only here on the back of a second place finish at the Rebel Stakes, one that came against a terrible field. Sure, he's working out well for trainer Keith Desormeaux, but we can't get past the fact that he's never even posted a 95 Beyer Speed Rating. And it's not like this is a brand new pony either; Sonneteer has raced 10 times. Lookin At Lee is a deep closer, and his best strides always seem to be his last. Even if he doesn't crack the board – and we think that he can – he should at least beat out Sonneteer.
Patch ( +130 ) vs. Irap
Irap is an interesting colt for sure. He was 31 to 1 in the Blue Grass Stakes and held on for a gritty victory. He'll be at the head of the pack in the Kentucky Derby for sure, but just how much is he going to have in the tank at the end, particularly after running in both the Blue Grass and the Spiral Stakes a couple weeks apart from one another. Patch, another of these deep closers, seems to be able to run for days and days. Again, he's a horse that we think has a shot at hitting the board, and the fact that we're getting him at plus odds when he should be at full strength in the dying strides against a colt who might just be a one-race wonder is too good to pass on.
Classic Empire ( +110 ) vs. Irish War Cry
On paper, there isn't much separating these two colts. They've both only been beaten once ( we won't count the Hopeful Stakes against Classic Empire since he dismounted his jockey a few strides in ). They've both won some big races. They've both got that similar, almost bullying style of racing in which they put their best foot forward in the last few furlongs.
But here's where they're different. Irish War Cry has a history of getting to the front of the field and never backing down. Classic Empire has fought on and finished respectably even in defeat. Irish War Cry's one loss came at the Fountain of Youth. He tired out and seemed awfully disinterested when he had a shot to go on and push for the win. If he goes out with a rabbit, there's a real chance that he could get worn out early on.
Classic Empire is the favored horse in this field for a reason, and it's shocking to us that we can get him at plus odds against a pony who, though can seriously contend, could easily finish towards the back of the pack, too.
