There was a long stretch at the Kentucky Derby in which favorites couldn't buy a break. Over the course of the last few years though, it's been all chalk at the Run for the Roses, beginning with Orb in 2013, California Chrome in 2014 and the great American Pharoah, the Sport of Kings' first Triple Crown winner since 1978 last year.
This year's race is shaping up to be the third in a row with a massive favorite lined at perhaps less than 3 to 1, but there are others who will be at the front of the pack along with Nyquist who could prove to beat the Kentucky Derby odds.

Nyquist ( +400 )
Where else could we start than with the overwhelming favorite to win the Kentucky Derby? Nyqust is the only undefeated horse in this field, and he's trying to become a rare Kentucky Derby champ who was also the two-year old champion last year. He's won some really big races in his career, and most were relatively impressive as well.
The only time Nyquist was really challenged was at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile against a really good field of 14, and he did his best to win that one at the wire against Swipe, Brody's Cause and other top dogs in his age class.
Mohaymen ( +705 )
Alright, so Mohaymen got put away by Nyquist at the Florida Derby. It happens. No big deal. Mohaymen is still the second best horse in this field for our money. He flat out dominated the Holy Bull and the Fountain of Youth against small fields, and though he did finish fourth at the Florida Derby with a poor 87 Beyer Speed Rating, we now know that he needs to be better positioned in this Kentucky Derby field to coast to victory.
The biggest takeaway from Mohaymen? His first workout at Churchill Downs, he blazed 46 and 4 over four furlongs, easily the fastest training session of the day.
My Man Sam ( +1246 )
The price on My Man Sam might not be great, but every now and again, you just find a horse who can navigate traffic really well, and that's what you need to win the Kentucky Derby. My Man Sam seems to be that horse. His resume is short with just four races, and he didn't even win his only race in qualifying for the Run for the Roses.
Sure, he was second best at the Blue Grass Stakes, but he had the most impressive run as we saw it, coming from the back of the field to finish second. Had he had one more furlong, he would've run down Brody's Cause that day and won that race.
