International ponies come across the pond all the time to race in the Longines Breeders' Cup, and they're often amongst the most difficult to handicap. In the case of the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf though, there's a definitive favorite coming from Europe who is very likely to win the race.
ODDS ANALYSIS
1: Golden Horn 4/5
2: Shining Copper 20/1
3: Big John B 30/1
4: Slumber 8/1
5: Da Big Hoss 30/1
6: Twilight Eclipse 20/1
7: Big Blue Kitten 8/1
8: Cage Fighter 30/1
9: Found 8/1
10: The Pizza Man 15/1
11: Red Rifle 10/1
12: Ordak Dan 30/1
This field really is all about Golden Horn at 4 to 5, a colt we will be gushing about momentarily. Aside from the favorite though, there isn't a colt in this field at better than 8 to 1, which is a damning proposition for the other 11 starters for sure. Found, Slumber and Big Blue Kitten are the 8 to 1 choices on the board, and it isn't far back to Red Rifle at 10 to 1 and The Pizza Man at 15 to 1.
There's a long way back to Shining Copper and Twilight Eclipse at 20 to 1, and the field rounds out with Cage Fighter, Big John B, Da Big Hoss and Ordak Dan at 30 to 1.
FAVORITE TO FOLLOW
Literally the only concern here for Golden Horn is that he's never run here in America in his career. He's only eight races in, but he's only been beaten once, that at the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes. Even in the racing notes from York that day, you can clearly tell that Arabian Queen, who beat out Golden Horn by a neck, got a much better run when the latter tripped up a bit at the gate.
Golden Horn is a favorite everywhere he goes, and this isn't going to be an exception. He's a well-known European champion with over six million reasons to be celebrated. We have a feeling he's going to be adding a few hundred thousand more reasons to smile on Saturday.
UNDERDOG TO WATCH
Big Blue Kitten at least has some potential here. Last year right around this time, he was up in Canada running in the Pattison Canadian International. Even though Big Blue Kitten came up second best that day, he posted a whopping 113 Beyer Speed Rating. There's no way he's getting beaten, even by Golden Horn on Saturday if he runs that fast.
That started a run of seven straight races finishing either first or second, including wins in a pair of Grade 1 races in the lead up to the Breeders' Cup.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
You can go up and down the list of American turfers, and you're just not going to find one which can compete with Golden Horn as we see it. Just the fact that Found, a horse which has already been put to shame overseas by Golden Horn, is the co-second favorite at 8 to 1 tells you all you need to know.
Golden Horn might be the best turf horse in the entire world, and we suspect he'll end up winning in one of the bigger margins of victory in the entire Breeders' Cup on Saturday.
