Three-year old fillies will be on display on Saturday afternoon at Santa Anita Park in the showcase race of the day at the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks.
ODDS ANALYSIS
There's a real chance that this 10-filly field will feature an odds-on favorite in Stellar Wind. She has won three of her five career starts, though it should be noted that the only time she didn't hit the board in her career came at the Kentucky Oaks in her last race. Prior to that though, she had great success on this track, winning both the Santa Ysabel Stakes and the Santa Anita Oaks in relatively easy runs.
Sheer Pleasure, who is also 3-for-5 in her career, will be amongst the favorites as well, as too should be Fantastic Style.
All Star Bub, Guild, Roksana, Tara's Tango, Conquest Curlgirl, and Scat Means Go will all be amongst the middling choices in this race, while the winless Danette will surely be the longest shot on the board, likely by a huge margin.
FAVORITE TO FOLLOW
It's so hard to not like Stellar Wind in this race. To say that she breezes around the track is an understatement. Her best training sessions have all been at Santa Anita, as have her best career races. She is going against a field which is nowhere near as strong as the one she lost to at the Kentucky Oaks, and that should really play into her hands.
UNDERDOG TO WATCH
Though Conquest Curlgirl has never run against any of the big girls in her career, we still think that she’s very dangerous and a live underdog in this one.
Her racing style is clearly going to show a ton of speed, which isn't in short supply in this race by any stretch of the imagination. She hasn't had great Beyer Speed Ratings, but the fact that she was sired by the great Curlin is always a plus.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The Summertime Oaks really only has a few contenders as we see it, and none of the top dogs are anywhere near as strong as Stellar Wind.
We hate backing these really big favorites in big graded stakes race, but we know that she is the class of this field and has a big stylistic advantage as well.
Stellar Wind is going to bide her time at the back of the field, and she'll let fillies like Conquest Curlgirl, Tara's Tango, Roksana and Fantastic Style run at the front of the pack.
To boost the odds a little bit, we'll play an exacta as well with Stellar Wind on top of Sheer Pleasure, who has really improved a lot since she had blinkers put on her two races ago.
Those who want the better payday should probably just go with the second choice on the board in Sheer Pleasure, but we still think this is a one-horse race waiting to happen.
Expect to see Stellar Wind make her move around the one-mile mark, and by that point, all of the fillies who were jockeying for position at the front of the pack over the course of the first mile should give way. Expect to see Stellar Wind win this one by at least two lengths.
