You might not know that the UFC has nearly 500 fighters on its roster. That’s because only a few of these men and women ever attain the popularity needed to become regulars on main cards. Most of these fighters will never become household names and their UFC careers will come and go without anyone of us ever hearing about them. But then there are the prospects who seemed destined to become part of the bigger picture.
Today, we’re taking a look through the sportsbook and picking out upcoming bouts featuring prospects who have a good chance of breaking out. As always, you can head over to the UFC odds section of the sportsbook and bet on these fights now.
ROBERT WHITTAKER
NEXT FIGHT: Uriah Hall -145 vs. Robert Whittaker +105 at UFC 193
24-year old Robert Whittaker emerged as the champion of TUF: The Smashes, although recent winners of the reality series have struggled to find success in the octagon. The young Australian might be able flip the script. He’s on a three-fight winning streak with wins over solid competition in Mike Rhodes, Clint Hester and most recently, Brad Tavares.
HIs last two victories have come by knockout - suggesting that the youth might have turned a corner after going 2-2 in his first four UFC appearances. If he can beat the enigmatic Uriah Hall in Australia, we could very likely see him face a well-known top-15 opponent in his next fight.
HENRY CEJUDO
NEXT FIGHT: Henry Cejudo -315 vs. Jussier Formiga +260 at UFC Fight Night 78
As with any Olympic gold medalist, Henry Cejudo has been on the radar ever since he transitioned to MMA in 2013. He’s won all three of his UFC appearances and has looked better in each outing. While some may not consider him a prospect at this point, it’s fair to say that he’s not yet a well-known commodity among casual fans.
However, if he can keep up his winning habits, we should see him matched up with champion Demetrious Johnson very soon. Because of his Olympic background, Cejudo might actually be able to drum up some interest for a division that has struggled to gain a fan following.
PAIGE VANZANT
NEXT FIGHT: Paige VanZant -570 vs. Joanne Calderwood +380 at UFC Fight Night 80
Is it possible to be a prospect and a headliner at the same time? You betcha. While VanZant is already a bigger star than many more accomplished fighters, we can’t deny that she’s still just 21 years old and raw as cookie dough. Still, her unrelenting pressure and aggression has been both extraordinarily effective and fan-friendly. In the thin women’s strawweight division, she could easily find herself in a championship bout with a few more victories.
MICHELLE WATERSON
NEXT FIGHT: Michelle Waterson +120 vs. Tecia Torres -150 at UFC 194
Former Invicta atomweight champion Michelle Waterson aka “The Karate Hottie” is set to make her debut this December, and the UFC is throwing her right into the fire against a tough opponent in Tecia Torres. Although Waterson’s good looks is part of her popularity, she’s got a flashy standup game that should appeal to casual fans - provided that she can score a few wins first.
