From Khabib Nurmagomedov to Ali Bageautinov, Dagestani fighters have been making waves in the UFC recently. Heavyweight Ruslan Magomedov – 13-1, 4 KOs – is hoping to add his name to that list in his matchup against Shawn Jordan – 18-6, 14 KOs, 3 SUBs – at UFC 192. It won’t be an easy task – Jordan is a hard-charging knockout artist who comes to finish fights.
CURRENT ODDS
Check our online UFC 192 odds for the latest money lines for each fighter, and expect Magomedov to be a favorite going into the bout. In this three-round bout, the total is likely to be set at 1.5 rounds, with the under being the more expensive bet. THE MARCH OF MAGOMEDOV
The 28-year old Magomedov made his UFC debut in May 2014, capturing a decision over Viktor Pesta. He then returned to the ring at UFC Fight Night 57 and took another decision over Josh Copeland. Prior to the UFC, “Leopard” fought in a variety of regional leagues, notching notable victories over former UFC fighters like Ricco Rodriguez and Tim Sylvia.
Jordan will enter the octagon for the 10th time, and is currently 6-3 in the octagon. Despite a good overall record, the American Top Team rep has fallen short every time he’s stepped up in competition, with losses to Cheick Kongo, Gabriel Gonzaga and Matt Mitrione. The best fighters he’s beaten are mid-tier guys like Pat Barry, Lavar Johnson and Derrick Lewis.
The heavyweight division is in need of new blood at the contender level, and Magomedov has an opportunity to step up. He’s begin brought along slowly, and facing a gatekeeper like Jordan is a solid test for the Dagestani native. If he can get past a brawler like Jordan, a fight against a top-15 opponent looms large.
FIGHT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
With 14 KOs in his 18 victories, there’s absolutely no doubt what Shawn Jordan wants to do. Dude comes looking to headhunt, and he’s pretty damn good at it. However, at 6’0 and 250 pounds, Jordan miserably fails the eyeball test. One would think that he could easily drop to 205 and fight guys closer to his size.
Magomedov is a 6’5” kickboxer who should be happy to oblige Jordan on the feet. He trains with Jackson’s MMA, a premier camp, and has also spent time in Thailand honing his skills. Interestingly enough, he’s had problems finishing people on the feet, with only four KOs in his 13 wins, but he can do a lot of damage rather quickly.
While Jordan is always a threat to plant a big shot and end the night, I lean towards Magomedov’s physical advantages in this bout. The Dagestani fighter has good footwork and simply must remained poised against Jordan’s charge. I’d expect a barnburner from the opening bell, with Magomedov catching Jordan with a counter and following up with strikes en route to a TKO finish in the first round.
